Marantz SR-6004 Receiver is flashing red light and not functioning

My 1.5 year old Marantz SR-6004 Receiver while running has suddenly faced with the problem of flashing red light and stopped delivering picture and sound.
That day I was running the AVR on our society DG Set (as there was power cut at that time) through a Bluebird Stabiliser and Belkin surge protector (ordinary model not Gold Series). The problem occured, when the City Power was restored and power was switched over from our Society DG Set to City Power.

As per the AVR Service Manual, it requires to be sent to Service Center. Does any FM had faced similar problem with their AVRs?

Can the problem be rectified by any Reset switch inside? I tried to google and found that sometimes this problem may happen in case of shorting of speaker wire. Can I open the AVR and check whether there is any burning smell or not!
I am afraid whether any parts have burnt inside.

My Dealer Bass n Treble suggested me to go for an UPS of sufficient capacity for the AVR as well as BDP and Plasma.
There is although mixed opinion of using UPS for AVR. Some manufacturer discourages using UPS for AVR.
I am slightly confused and require FMs sharing their experience please.

Red flashing light usually happens when there is problem with power supply. It is better to send it for servicing. I hope it is under warranty, else prepared to shell around 2-3K. I have seen this in my AVR and I got it serviced recently.

Is there any ups that can be used for an AVR? Is the DG backup in apartments safe for the AVR?

Similar thing happened with my old 1909 last week. There was some short circuit in my mains line and the AVR went into protect mode.

Don't open the set yourself. See what the service guys say.

The well meaning chaps at ProFX were prattling on about shipping the AVR to BLR, etc, etc. Minimum 6k plus shipping, etc.

Took it to a very competent gentleman. He checked and said that two amplifier sections (center and left surround) are blown. It would cost Rs. 5200 to rectify.

Well all this does sound scary. Living in Gurgaon means having constant powercuts. The apartment does have 100% backup, but whenever the power goes kaput it takes atleast 30 seconds for the Diesel Generator to kick in. Same thing happens again when the power returns, only this time the gap is just 2-3 seconds.

I will not recommend running any audio video gear under a switching power supply from the mains. There could be spikes in the line when power resumes, during the switching phase from mains to generator and back.

A colleague runs his AV through a 1.5Kva APC UPS. This UPS is in the chain only to protect the expensive equipment from abrupt power outages, not as a power backup source. The power amplifier runs through a Belkin Ultimate series surge protector. The surge protector failed twice as a result of spikes in the line. Thats how bad our raw power is.

I'm getting a RCCB fitted on the 5A lines. This should act as a shield right?

Could you suggest which 1.5Kva APC UPS he is using. Even I need something similar just to protect the equipment from sudden power outages!

Re: Marantz SR-6004 Receiver is flashing red light and not functioning

Just use a higher than necessary electronic voltage stabilizer like 4 KVA rating, even though your actual load is in the 1 KVA range with all HT units running together. Just make sure that the stabilizer is provided with high as well as low voltage auto-cutoff facility. Just like the ones used for air-conditioners.

But what really makes me think is, how is it you guys have the GUTS to run such expensive equipments on 'irregular/unfiltered' DG power, when there is an outrage on the regular one? Regular is as such of suspect quality (which needs careful individual regulation), DG would be trash-loaded.

A APC Back-UPS 1500VA is used for a computer, router, main tv display, computer display.

The Belkin surge protector connected to raw power is used for Power Amplifier and AV Processor. He did try running the pre power through the UPS and the current draw was somewhere in the region of 600watts at moderate volume levels. The UPS can take the load easily though he preferred not to run it this way as the back up levels come down significantly and he would like to avoid any abrupt restarts for the computer.

A quality surge protector is all you need. What needs to be avoided is abrupt restarts of AV equipment.
