Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

Some of you would have seen me & Sachi to often bombard the headphone threads with all things orthodynamic. Today, I thought that I should start a dedicated thread & save the unsuspecting HFV members from our 'enthusiasm'.
Those who are interested are most welcome to join us here.

The details for orthodynamic driver principle are here
and the massive orthodynamic thread at head-fi.

In short these are planar drivers which uses a thin membrane with etched voice coil pattern & is driven by the magnetic fields of the superimposed magnets.
Some of you would be familiar with speaker implementations of planar technology - the magneplanars, Martin logan etc.

A defining feature of orthos for many of us has been there midrange. They have the most natural & organic mid-range that I have heard from any transducer. Most orthos even vintage ones get that part right even in there stock form & once modded they can be extended towards both ends of spectrum in a manner that is comparble to any of the top-end dynamics.
There are caveats though - most vintage orthos do not have the headstage of the modern dynamic headphones, also modding is not everyone's cup of tea even though most mods are pretty simple.
This is not to say that there aren't vintage headphones which sound good in stock form, Infact the venerable yamaha YH-1000 & Fostex T50 V1 are still regarded as one of the best headphones of all time.

Fortunately, We are now getting to see some new headphones being produced today :
1) Hifiman HE-5
2) Audeze LCS-2 : This recently introduced headphone is getting some rave reviews & is a top contender for best headphone of all time. I would love to own one.

P.S. @Sachi- I know you are cursing me for some blatant omissions but you know my position.

Ah, I see you are still spreading the Ortho goodness !

Yes I am still enjoying the modded Yamaha HP-2s that you gave me. I hadn't heard them for a few days and I was listening to the Sennheiser HD650s when Handels : The arrival of Queen Sheeba started playing. Just when I was enjoying the sound of the violins and trumpets I remembered the HP-2s. So I immediately brought them out and remembered the reason why orthos are said to have a wonderful midrange ! The violins, trumpets all sounded amazing ! So organic and lush and at the same time the instrument separation and imaging was spot on and was better than the much more expensive HD650s.

I really really want to get the Audeze LCD 2. I would never have to upgrade after that. But at $940 + shipping I will have to really save up for it.

Re: Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

^ I am on a 2 year hiatus from headphone buying. So, may be I should buy LCD2 after that and be done with "upgraditis"

Still enjoying my Fostex T20. Among the headphones and IEMs I own, this one is currently my favourite. Headstage may be lacking, but then it makes up for it in the SQ. It is as close as it gets to my preferred signature. At a fraction of the cost of a high-end dynamic, this one has sure saved my wallet - something we don't normally associate with head-fi

I have already made up my mind ! No more high end purchases (camera or headphone) till I have saved up enough for the LCDs (hopefully by next year) !!!

The more reviews I have read of the LCDs have confirmed that they are the perfect headphones for my taste in music. - Rich midrange, zero sibilance, deep bass etc.

Its nice to see you are enjoying the T20 so much. The Maverick DAC must form a good combo with this.

Me too But why that cheapass form?! For 1k they should have gone for some nice soft leather...Ed.8 comes to mind. Strictly personal opinion.

Plus its size is a matter of personal choice. Sachu in his elements!

Re: Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

@unleash me : that foam is a special one, especially chosen to keep the weight well distributed & supposed to be more resilient than it looks.
BTW, IMO the ED.8 look like cheap philips can while LCD-2 has class written all over it.
Just my opinion though.
