Re: AV Rack in chennai

Hi,
Am based in bombay so cant really tell u about racks in chennai.
But since u need it by sat the best option would be to get one of the standard racks offered by most AV dealers(AUDIO PEOPLE should have them for sure). Depending on the budget u will get one to suit ur needs.
If it can wait a bit the best option is to get a good carpenter and get him to make a rack from solid wood( as against plywood, particleboard, mdf etc). Log on to standanddeliver.com for great ideas.
Regards

Hi.

I too searched all over Chennai for an AV rack, but not even one I could find for dedicated AV equipments. Audio People has some nice AV racks that he uses for his high-end equipments, but all imported from Singapore, so if ordered have to wait for a long time, i guess. There is one nice three-shelf 10 mm glass AV rack, very very solid, which I stumbled upon accidentally at Sony showroom in Velachery for sale, they quoted me around 9k. I can enquire if you're okay with the price. If they're still available, you can come down to Sony at Velachery and have a look before taking the plunge.

Cheers.

Kalyan:

If the racks come out well, please refer your carpenter to me. I am looking for two racks with four shelves each. I have contacted one Mr. Murthy in Bangalore and he has sent me some photographs.

Re: AV Rack in chennai

Hi Kalyan,

It is very simple to make a hi-fi rack yourself. It took me two days to make one and the entire process was fun. Also you can customize it your proportions (I used golden ratios for rack dimensions to keep away rogue resonance), high quality 0.75 " MDF panels with veneer paneling giving it a beach-wood finish and spiked rods (turned on a precision lathe) to keep away acoustic feedback. It is a 3 leg design so coupling points to floor are minimised. Also if you wish to place a turn table on top, it is easy to level it. All racks can be adjusted to whatever height you want. I was in a little hurry to have all my equipment back and get to listening. Take one more day than I did to finish it and I am sure your rack will be a thing of absolute beauty. No commercially sold unit comes close to this and you would have the satisfaction of having custom built it yourself (trust me, that feeling alone is worth attempting this). My advise, don't use glass shelves. They do not dampen vibrations. Use MDF, the choice of the best speaker manufacturers.

Guess what, the entire thing cost me about Rs 3000 and it is a proper Hi-Fi rack with no pretensions
