My Review Took a 5 minute demo of both LG DV388 and Samsung 1080-pk each yesterday. Here are my views and opinions :- Remote :- Samsung has a good chunky feeling remote , LG is more of sleek compact variety. Both the remotes had ok response. I will rate both of them as equal as far as utility is concerned. USB Playback: Ok here is where LG is better. Unlike Samsung LG is not limited to reading 14 chars of the filename! It was being able to read a considerable part of the filename if not full. USB loading took less than 3 seconds in the LG ( Samsung was slower). FF speeds were the same for both. Ok now the main part â I had taken a mixture of files on my 8 GB pen drive. There were 3-4 Divx and Xvid movies, one entire DVD movie and few MP3âs. LG and Samsung played all of the Divx Formats with the exception of one which both could not read. LG played the DVD movie (Sarkar) also but surprisingly the Samsung was not being able to enter into the folder (Folder Name: Video-TS) . Now I donât know whether reinsertion of flash drive would have worked but this was one major bummer for me !! Can somebody please confirm whether we can play DVD â vob files via flash drive in 1080-pk ?Quality:- Here was the demo setup. LG was hooked to a 42â Phillips while the Sammy was plugged into a 42â Samsung LCD. I was at a distance of around 7ft from the Phillips LCD and at a distance of 4 ft from the Samsung LCD. (HDMI cabling for both) I played back my favourite Divx Movie in the LG and it looked good. But when I played back the same in Samsung I was shocked . The image was not as sharp and tight as LG .There was blurring in the face closeups. But again was the distance between me and the two TVâs a factor here? Price:- LG Rs 3700/- and Samsung Rs 4200/- . Both of them have free HDMI cable bundled. The difference is hardly Rs 500/-. Looks: Samsung definitely looks better. Overall voteâLG The above impressions have forced me to look into Phillips 5996 before I decide. This is very simply for the fact that I donât trust LG players. I donât think there would be anybody in this forum who would be using a LG DVD player for more than a year?? I expect a min. life span of 3 years out of my player after which obviously one will have to upgrade to Full HD (maybe sooner but still)!!

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB
I am using LG DV388 since last 40 days... so far I am highly satisfied with its performance.
Its a sleek player with quality picture output. One of the major reason I went for it was its ability to play movies directly from USB port (using a flash drive - FAT or FAT32 formatted; I havent tried 250GB HD so far since its NTFS formatted and I have a lot of data on it )I have tried DIvx, Xvid, VOB, MPG formats and all of them played very well on this player (I tried playing with USB as well with DVD) ..manual mentiones abount playin compatibility with 3IVX format as well. The manual of the player says that the USB is 1.1 and that's where I was wondering if samsung would have been a good buy (1080PK USB is 2.0 compatible - as mentioned in player specifications) but after reading Illusion's reviews of samsung player, I believe my decision to go for LG was not wrong. My LG player didn't came bundled with HDMI cable. Samsung was providing the same. Player costs me 3750 INR whereas Samsung 1080PK was available at only one shop at time of purchase and was costing me 4200 INR. Warranty period for both players is 1 yr and hence I dont think there should be much confusion between samsung or LG brand since both are more or less of same category. |

Hey hold on for a sec, are you sure that the USB port is 1.1 and not 2.0 ? Ezone guys had confirmed to me that it had a USB 2.0 port !!! If possible can you attach a image of that part of the manual which claims that the port is USB 1.1 !! Also are you using the player with HDMI cable ? |

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB
I personally believe that USB port is 2.0 since it plays all DIVX/XVID encoded movies without any lag. but still the words in manual of the product says its USB 1.1
Maybe manual of the product is not upto the mark.. on the box and player body it states the USB point as "USB plus" that makes me wonder if it really is 2.0 compatible :P (i wish it is) but overall its giving me no problems at all playing the media through USB. |

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB
manual states its USB 1.1.
also I have noticed slow FF/rewinding speed while playing through USB port. Hence it seems to be USB 1.1 only
