Could not. My Hdd had bad sectors. So I had to copy all data back into my desktop/laptop. I will try it as soon as I get a replacement hdd.

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB

I have a question.

Does any of these players support playing from 2.5" External hard disk drives?

I have one without external power supply (seagate freeagent go 320GB), It takes power from USB itself. So many players which support pen drives seem to not support this.

Has anyone tried out the above? Any comments on players which support 2.5" external HDD is welcome.

Well the portable 2.5" drive will work fine with the Phillips USB 2 port dvd players, it will not work with the lg dv388 as it has a usb 1.1 port

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB

I have got Philips DVP5996.
So, far its been very good. I'm using an external HDD and memory stick with this one and the pq is excellent with the original DVDs.

I'm able to play AVI files but some of them gives me GMC codec or simply codec not supported errors, while running those AVI files.

Can someone tell me what could be the issue! I'm runnin the latest firmware (.31). I'm also not able to play WMV file I was expecting it to play WMV and somewhere I read that too!!
Can someone comment on this issues??
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

AVI is a Container Format and can contain Videos created using a wide range of codecs. AVI files created using Divx or Xvid Codecs should be normally supported by Philips 5996. You can run the AVI File in your PC and find out about the Codecs used by checking on the Properties. If it is an unsupported Codec, you will have to convert it to a supported format using a video converter software such as Virtualdub (Free) using Divx or Xvid Codecs etc. There are other converters such as 'Super' (Free) available on Internet. Once you do that your files should run on 5996.

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB

Yes Prakash. You are right. The Philips player does not play uncompressed AVI. Compressing the files introduces visible distortion on big screens. So I would recommend preserving he original video and use the encoded one on this player.

Thanks,
Sharad

Re: Best DVD player iwth USB

Hi Folks - Is there a problem in fast forward divx/xvid files on 5996 when playing out of the hard disk? Or is there a smarter way to do it that I am not aware of? Please help.
