When you talk about radio, you mostly have portability in mind. With that thrown out the window with Worldspace, it becomes that much unattractive to the common radio listener. Urban listeners of FM mostly listen while on the move. So, they look at the size of the worldspace receivers and back out. That is one reason, I believe why worldspace is not really catching on.

Satellite radio is line of sight transmission. Hence a worldspace receiver installed in a car (for instance) is not viable in urban areas (where building etc. block the line of sight) till a good amount of repeater infrastructure is built.

Re: Right now I am listening to ...

Is it a good time to invest in WorldSpace hardware and subscription? Because I am hearling a lot of bad news about the service providers and dealers here in Pune are not seem to be enthusiastic while selling WordSpace.

While on the topic please suggest me a good receiever (new / pre-owned) for World Space, it seems that BPL stuff is the only option available at this time.

I heard about BPL Celesta (?) MK II but it is quite big and ugly looking and doesn't have a Remote. BPL DIva (or One world) is compact but no built in speaker and AM/FM radio.

Is there any compact model with built it small speaker and perhaps AM/FM receiver.
Regards

SUhas

Re-Worldspace;
Yes there is talk abt how the WS parent Co is in big financial trouble.
Whether that should deter one from getting into WS now is a tough one.
If you can get a Second hand one( I seem to remember you posting that your relative whose CDs you are selling off also had a WS receiver to be flogged off?), you could go in for either a 1/2 yr subs-Rs1000 or a one year-Rs1800,& enjoy the music till it lasts.
For me, their most appealing channels are Farishta-old hindi film songs & Gandharva-Hindustani classical.
I have a BPL diva ,connected to my main system, it yields a quite listenable sound.
Apart from these 2 channels, there are many other channels, which are pretty good.
I've had WS for over 4 yrs now & consider the Rs 1800 annual subs as money well spent.
Cheers.

No that was not a WS receiver but a Tata Sky Dish. Anyway thanks for the inputs. I am considering WS despite of those bad news but will get a receiver with built in speakers , AM/FM radio and of course a Remote. So in case WS winds up their operations , I still can use the radio part of the WS receiver.

@Kamal: Gandharva indeed is a nice channel.

Why i particularly admire WSPace is the content those gyus have aggregated. Its certainly class apart and could only be bettered if AIR(All India Radio) decides to remaster and sell its archives!!

@SuhasG: Get the Diva, its money well spent, i've heard the bpl one with speakers and am/fm etc and its serious peirce of crap. The Diva gives you the freedom of "Discreet Components".

"Ramanza" by Andrea Bocelli.

Regarding Worldspace Radio, all I can say is to repeat:

There's so much to hear ...

My current subscription end 30 Sept and I have already renewed is for 2 more years. If you belong to the era when there were only radios and you miss the charm of old time radio, then you must invest in it - it worth more than every paisa you would spend.

Content, genres, variety, decent comperes, complete songs played, no nonsense like the FM, no advt. and great sound quality (I listen to it through my home theatre setup) - what else do you want?

For portability? You have iPod !!!

After quite a while today I listened to Bob Dylan. Paid a lot of attention to Forever Young. This guy has a pretty good voice. He seems to intentionally make it sound harsh.

And also got to watch Jethro Tull's "Living With The Past" DVD. A number of live performances in small settings. Nice trip down memory lane.
