Arrow Importance of Acoustically customizing Listening Room.

It is well said that a chain is as strong as its weakest link. This may sound like a cliche but is so true when it comes to the weakest link, the acoustic quality of a good Home theatre room, or the 'listening room' in general.
We spend millions on the equipment in getting worlds most sought after brands and other gizmos like accentuated lighting, seating systems, etc. but fail to customize our theatres acoustically. This is mainly due to the reason of lack of awareness but more because of our belief that it is a wastage of hard earned money.

Subhash, the ceiling definitely has an influence on the sound in the room. By treating your ceiling correctly, you can tame some of the problems like first reflections, standing waves etc.

Ok. Then it surely means that approx all indian homes (Ceiling made of concrete) are very prone to reflections and thus needs to be treated?

Any other solutions which leaves ceiling untreated?

By untreated, I am assuming you mean that you do not want to go in for a false ceiling. But if you are having issues, treatment is required. Instead of a false ceiling, you could go in for sound traps or ceiling diffusors.

I am no expert, my posts are purely based on what I have researched by reading online in order to build my Home Theatre Room(which is WIP).

By ceiling diffusor you mean the wooden frame that appears on the ceiling?

Yes, the shape of the wooden frame is such that it reflects sound in various directions(which again gets absorbed, diffused or reflected) thus reducing the energy in the sound. If not for diffuser\absorption, the sound would have otherwise reflected towards the listener after a time delay causing echoes and pitches. This should be avoided to experience.

Diffusers can be of several shapes. Not everyone would like their treatment to look like one. The one that I posted looks discreet. More shapes for diffusers here

Subhash, Praveen showed me the Anutone Ceiling Tiles (Black color) and I was impressed. The only reason why I am not proceeding with that is that it requires a T-bar grid. I suggest you go in for a black colored T-bar. I saw this in INOX yesterday. FYI, I have been watching movies in theatres for a while now to get ideas for my Home Theatre

Please move all the electronics out of the room, it is worth it. No matter how much you instruct workers to be careful, they take it lightly and also accidents do happen. Add to that the fact that dust can be very bad for these equipment. Also, Plaster of Paris work can be even more messier to clean afterwards. Ceiling Tiles are much easier to work with.
