AVR for Movies only

Hi Friends!!

I have been contemplating for the past few months on my ongoing situation: Not happy with my movie effects with my current AVR Marantz SR5001. It is awesome for music but thats it. It lacks the punch for movies. I am now in the lookout for a new AVR which should be great for movies. For music, I plan to buy a Integrated or a pre-power combo later on.

I have a budget of 50-60k for the same. I shall eagerly await your suggestions.

I am looking at exceptional Sound Quality.

Thanks.

Re: AVR for Movies only

Take a look at the Yamaha 863. With full 1080P upscaling, the 863 has special DSP chips for enhancement of movie sounds. Yamaha has always been a step ahead of others when it comes to decoding surround sound. The 863 is around 60K. In addition, new Yamaha models support 2 LFE channels.

Next in line, I suppose would be the Onkyo 700 or 800 series. These are a bit more expensive, though. With THX2 Select support, these models are also very good for movies.

Cheers

Bro...

You are requesting something great for movies...
Than in any case the prefference goes to YAMAHA...

But, when you even consider the exceptional sound quality, with the same, than the best AV combination amplifier, suggestions routes to higher ends of DENON...AVR-2308...

Consider the same...and experience with your own discs...which one suits you the best...

Best of Luck...

Mridul/ Venky>

Infact, I myself had these two brands in mind- Yamaha and Denon.

Since, I am upgrading from Marantz SR5001, I am looking at a big sound diffence in surround sound. Will the 2308 or the 863 provide that.

Actually, I was looking at the latest yam 2809 and Yam 1800. Which one would you suggest of the two for my need precisely?

Bear in mind, stereo sound is not important as I shall going for integrated/ pre-power later on.

Thanks.

Q: If I add a 2 channel power amp to my Marantz- Will that make a difference to the surround sound in the same way as a new Yam or Denon without a power amp will do???
This will save me a lottttttt of dough!!!

Mridul> Do you suggest Denon will be a better sounding AVR than Yamaha?
Higher models of Denon should be preffered to higher models of Yamaha?
Kindly clarify.

thanks

The above comments were based on my personal experience...

Yamaha is very good for PQ, but lacks in THX...

But, when it comes to Denon 2308/2309, though they are not THX certified, but they provide better PQ & Surround Sound Experience...
Denon i believe is a balanced system...

But, when it comes to Music over Video, the preference goes to Marantz...
Same, when it comes to Video over Music, the preference goes to Yamaha...

So, its your call...

Re: AVR for Movies only

Mridul..

I have shorlisted two AVR's > Denon 2809 and Denon 3808

I have two questions for you based on your replies:
a) Solely comparing the above on sound quality....will there be a big difference b/w the two?
b) I am expecting a big difference in terms of surround-sound in direct comparison to my Marantz Sr5001. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Re: AVR for Movies only

Hi!!

Time and again People are telling me to go for Yamaha 1800 over Denon 2809 for better movie effects. Although, I have not experienced Yamaha first hand but for movies it has a reputation. Not sure what to do here.....

As i said, earlier, and as a general opinion, Yamaha is good enough for movie EFFECTS....

But, you are looking for Good Surround Sound effects as well...
So for that, Denon, is the best choice...

Ask, the person, the best one for the combination...

And, i should say Denon 2809, should workout for you, instead of Denon 3808...

Last but not the least, it all your choice...
Anyhow, you have to stick with the Reciever, in your home...HeHe...
