Hello everyone

I generally dl movies and put them in an external hard disk as I have limited disk space on Laptop. Now the issue is that many times I do not remember-

1.) What all movies do I have?

2.) How many are in HD?

3.) How many I have among different genres?

So is there some software which is easy and simple to use to manage the list of movies? I do not want extra features and do not want to waste much time on the software either.

I did a bit of research and found these two-

http://www.coollector.com/index.html

http://www.bolidesoft.com/allmymovies/scr-virtual-shelf.html

However I havent used any of them as yet as I do not know how easy or difficult they would be and havent got the time to test them.

So any recommendations?

Regards

My favorite app is "Collectorz.com Movie Collector". Very easy to use AND very intuitive (Just replace XX with 'tt' in the URL below). :eek:hyeah:

hXXp://www.collectorz.com/movie/

P.S. There's one software by the same vendor for game collectors as well.

collectorz.com's movie collector is the best but expensive and most of the other softwares either lag or crash,
p.s- if u get a patch or keygen no matter what they say it always get detected after 250 movies,
so if u don't mind spending then go for collectorz.com, its the best and reliable!!

+1 for xbmc .....

1.) What all movies do I have?

XBMC will render a list of all your movies with fanart, thumbnail and movie information from IMDB

2.) How many are in HD?

Easy, just create smart playlists, feature that I discussed in my HTPC thread (check my sig) and you can,... not only group all your HD movies, you can very well group any kind of movies, like all Hindi movies, all Animation etc.

3.) How many I have among different genres?

Again we have a feature called "Boxsets" in xbmc, where in you can create sets for your movies according to Genre or Actors or Sequels or pretty much anything. Like you can create a Boxset for all 007 Bond movies, all Arnold Movies, similarly all Action, All Comedy can be categorized under one Box set.

This feature I have not discussed in my HTPC thread yet, but if you want I can explain the same on my thread (its anyhow long pending for a new update .... :D)

Lastly XBMC is free. Plus it also acts as an awsome player, plays all movies and codes OOTB. Its best potential is when we use it with an HTPC, but anyone can use it to organize his movie collection locally. (Online as well by using TPP, like I have one called "Sharethe.tv" in my sig, lists all my movie collection ... :D)

I put all my 720p/1080p/SD movies in different directories.
I use combination of softwares to manage and watch HD movies.

1> Media Center Master - to collect the metadata of the movies from internet db.

2> Mediabrowser - just like xmbc but this is windows media center plugin which can be used to watch movies through WMC. (mediabrowser.tv)

it works flawlessly.

pungan, does media center master pick the runtime of the movie from the media file or from the IMDB? I have noticed that even in case of XBMC this is one issue where the runtime in the file is not considered. Hence for movies where there are director's extended cut etc this will lead to a confusion when looking later on at the library.

You could try Wwidd. It's somewhat different from the other solutions mentioned here (Coolector, Collectorz, Bolidesoft), in that its main purpose is to add meaningful and searchable tags to videos. It's also an active open source project, w/ more and more useful features coming out with each release.

@haisaikat, Media Center Master is pretty good, I use it frequently when IMDB misses to pick few of the attributes (I mentioned and explained that in my HTPC thread as well) ,......... anyway MCM picks infor from IMDB movie code, which is present in the url for that movie ....like for ex for 127 hours we have the link ......."http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1542344/" so all MCM need is tt1542344 and it will pick all information and dont worry we dont need to provide the code it picks it automatically as well, however in few cases it misses as well and then opens up a dialogue box to enter the code, which when we do it continues to pick all the data and store it in the movie folder ....
IMDB then picks up all the correct information to be displayed .....

Tried the XBMC and it works. However there is one problem I encountered. The drive to which I installed XBMC had about 7.5 GB of free space at the time of installation. However, after adding my movie collection to the database and getting the movie info from the net, I suddenly noticed that the available disk space had gone down to only 128MB!!! WTH??? I thought the XBMC was only cataloguing the movie collection, not actually transferring the movies to the destination drive. Can someone please advise....

^^ XBMC does take a lot of space, as it download loads of information and creates thumbnails and fanart for all of you movies, however It should not be that huge in your case ...... go to c:/=>users=><your user name>=>Appdata=>Roaming.

There you will find a folder called xbmc, right click and ckeck how much space it is taking ...... for me with around 250 movies, the size is about 2GB. So you can calculate if you have 500 movies scanned, your folder should be around 4GB and so on.....

I download a lot of movies....... I use a simple excel spreadsheet and type all the movie names that I download.

I first download the movie in the computers hard disk and then insert its name in the spreadsheet and then transfer it to the external hard disk........)

Easy and Simple........do it few times and you wont forget........

errr.... Thats easy ..? Anyway IMDB itself gives a way to manage your list.

1. Just create your account, go to any movie
2. You will see a "watchlist" button and a drop down arrow against it.
3. Click on the drop down arrow and click "New List"
4. name it "Movies I own"
5. Now any movie you want to go under "Movies I own" all you need to do is click on watchlist and choose "Movies I own" and you will have list of all your movies you own.

In the similar manner you can create a list for Movies Seen, Movies Pending, Movies Must See ....etc etc.

Like I have created a list of all rated movies which is also my all movies seen, check out the link ...

If you need to archive info about the movie file, like size, resolution, playback time etc. only and don't need info from http, then please post your requirements here. I will try to design a VB database application for that.

Thanks a lot! Though I wont trouble you with the software. My requirements are fairly simple. I just wanted to make a list of all my movies, Classify them by Genres and whether they are HD or not. No extra info is required. I have got a good list of softwares in the topic and hopefully one of them would be easy enough to do this simple task.

Finally my search seems to have ended with emdb.

EMDB is a small utility to keep track of your DVD collection. With an automatic import from the database of IMDB, export to csv, text or complete website, thumbnail cover preview, a loan tracker, search function and multi-language user interface. EMDB is written in C++ using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and doesn't need a .NET framework or any other external libraries. And best of all... it's free!

Guys, I'm reviving this thread as I have been hunting for this solution for a long time now & frustrated!!!

I know I have a very very different requirement. Some may find it weird but somehow I have setup my mind on this combination, so please bear with me and assist.

I am writing my end result here, please assist me with what to get and from where:

I have the following:
1. 500 GB FreeAgent SeaGate - Movies / Music collection
2. 1 TB GoFlex Seagate - Movies Collection
3. Lots of DVD & some BD movies in discs.
3. Old IBM Thinkpad R50 laptop with 512MB RAM and Windows XP / Ubuntu (dual boot)

My planned final setup:
Laptop:
1. Some software which is simply a catalogue of my movies with IMDB data / posters and optional fields for my own custom inputs / comments. I am willing to install any OS on this laptop if it helps.
2. I don't want to play movies from this software.

Android Phone:
1.Some Android app for my phone to have this movie catalogue synced. I don't want to view movies on my phone, just have access to this catalogue.
2. Ability to update some fields in this app on the phone which can be synced back.

How will I use this:
-On this movie catalog on my laptop, I will create an index of all movies in different drives and show the location accordingly.
-When I decide on a movie, I shall look it up on my phone and know which drive has this movie and attach this particular drive to the Media Player and watch the movie.
-In case the movie is a DVD / BD disc, I shall get the disc and play it.

Where am I stuck:
1. Which movie catalog can support above requirement? Need IMDB info as well as custom fields. Need Android app for this as well.
2. Which Android app is related to this?

I know this is a very weird requirement, but somehow I am hellbent on setting this up.

I would really appreciate if you experts could help me here!

Thanks a ton!

P.S: I have played with & rejected the following:
XBMC - Too long to index. Cannot define custom fields.
Ant Movie Catalog - No Android app
Tellico (Ubuntu)- Very simple. Fast. No Android app
My Movies.dk - Closest fit so far, but a very slow PC application
My Movie Collection (Chrome)- Cannot define custom fields. No Android app. The BEST if developed to accommodate custom fields & Android. Sad, no response from developers.
EMDB (mentioned in this thread)- Nice, no Android app.
IMDB - No custom fields, Android app cannot show other lists, except Watchlist.

Will update more as my research continues

I am not sure what you mean by "Cannot define costume fields"... But there is virtually nothing you can not configure XBMC with, as far as a quality YAMJ goes

We have an android remote and an android apps coming soon for XBMC ....

Thanks for your reply. By custom field, I meant that I want an option to add extra fields where I can update my personal data, for e.g. my views on the movie, another field to update that the subtitles are bad, etc.

I'm looking for a ready solution & will definitely consider XBMC when their Android app is released.

Any other suggestions?

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
