On this wonderful Thursday, with Shirdi Sai Baba’s blessing, we at Absolute Phase launch “Ophidian Audio Limited”, another bespoke loudspeaker brand from the United Kingdom, under our reputed and respected portfolio!
Some background about Ophidian Audio Limited: Mr Gareth James is the Sole Director & proprietor of the company and has been running the company since its inception in 2011, with the goal of producing high-quality British made loudspeakers that outperform their physical dimensions.
He started out designing loudspeakers around age 16 before going to university firstly to study computing and then latterly at the University of Salford where he studied Audio/Video Systems and Acoustics in their world-renowned labs.
All Ophidian loudspeakers feature the unique AEROFLEX bass topology which ensures clean and accurate bass reproduction even from the smallest of cabinets.
The cabinets for all Ophidian speakers are hand-built in Sheffield by a top cabinet manufacturer that also produces cabinets for many other top UK brands in England with assembly and quality checking completed at Ophidian HQ on the Wirral in North West England The wiring and electronics all come from Germany including crossover components from Mundorf of Germany including audiophile-grade capacitors, pure oxygen-free copper coils and metal-oxide film resistors and is assembled here on-site by hand in the UK. The use of such high-quality components ensures that signal integrity is preserved from beginning to end and music sounds as it should. All Ophidian loudspeakers feature drive units designed to deliver music free from distortion and colouration and as naturally as possible.
The tweeter units, from renowned manufacturer SEAS of Norway, feature Sonolex coated fabric diaphragms that provide a detailed yet smooth performance that is easy to listen to for long periods.
AEROFLEX is a unique bass loading method that enables even the most compact cabinets to deliver clean, accurate bass. Ported or reflex speakers, as they are often commonly known, re-use what would otherwise be wasted energy from the rear of the bass driver to boost the low frequencies.
Unfortunately in most systems the size of the port is inadequate and at high volumes or even during just short musical peaks unwanted noise and distortion occur.
By utilising a much larger and longer port system AEROFLEX drastically lowers air velocity, properly controlling the driver throughout its stroke. This greatly enhances dynamic range and ensures that the speaker produces the same tonal balance at both high and low volume levels. The port is built into the cabinet itself enhancing structural rigidity which in turn improves the quality of the midrange.
Every speaker is hand-built, normally by himself and is made to order, and then tested and measured for consistency vs recorded baselines. So it is a relatively small operation and certainly not a mass-produced item.
Hundreds of hours of design, prototyping, measurement and listening tests have created each Ophidian loudspeaker.
