I have finally decided to take the plunge and replace my old 29'' crt with a large screen tv, preferably a plasma as i want the biggest screen size possible. I am novice guys and looking forward to your advice.

My budget is 40,000 to 45,000 for TV & 15000 for HT.
No 3d required.
No smart features required.
Viewing distance 10ft.
My room size is 18ft by 12 ft

I'll be using it for watching HD channels form tata sky hd, 720p movie rips and SD channels. I am not planning for a blu ray player.

Considering my usage would a HD ready TV be best?? Also i am thinking of going in for 50'' screen (if possible) but i am worried SD channels wont look great on it at 10 ft. I can increase my budget to 50,000 for TV if its really worth it but more money saved the better.

Looking forward to your help guys.....

Also one of my friends is visiting Thailand next month. I am thinking TV's may be under customs duty now but i can still get HT from there duty free. Should i get HT from Thailand or India?? Which one would you suggest...

You may get the TV from thailand or even the HT provided you are ok with the warranty claim - which mostly is not entertained here. As you already know, the TV is now under the customs terms and conditions!!! About your HT, you would then need to check what weight percentage is allowed in the baggage at the customs.

For TV you may check for Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba in the price range here.

Your budget is less for HT. You would need to increase the budget if buying from India. There is no decent HT in 15K here.
If you are still bound to your budget do mention. We shall see what best can be to suit your interest.

I am thinking of buying TV from India and HT from Thailand if i can save some money. I am willing to stretch my budget to Rs. 25,000 for HT if its worth it but the only thing is I a novice and dont want to get stuck with a bad HT. What i have read on the forum is that Onkyo 3400 or 3500 will be the best deal.

If you want biggest possible TV no matter the company you can go for 46 LED
Shop for Reconnect LED TV, 46 inch at Reliance Digital

Basic 50+plasma would be 50k + range i.e : Pana TH-P50X50D or LG 50PN4500
You can also check some deals at reliance mart, croma etc for some combo offer.

Out of Panasonic, LG & Samsung which TV models would you recommend. Should i stick Rs 50,000 for the TV or should I increase the budget. I thought 50+ plasma (HD ready) would be around 50k?? Max i can do is 60K and i would have stretched my budget a lot.

For your HT budget of 25K you can check as you informed about Onkyo 3400/3500, and then you have Denon 1312xp, Yamaha 196

For the TV - do demo first. Either panasonic, samsung, toshiba or even LG. List out what you want. Good PQ, Smart features etc.

Always first demo the product, then decide. Shortlist them and then finally eliminate based on your priority.

1. Yamaha YHT 196
2. Onkyo 3500
3. Denon DHT-1312XP
