I wanted a bluetooth adaptor which outputs USB output so that I could connect it to my Cambridge Audio Amplifier CA651A which has a USB input.

Had a raspberry pi lying around, used it with a IO-Gear BT GBU-521 dongle and followed the instructions at the link below:

Turn your Raspberry Pi into a Wireless Portable Bluetooth Audio System A2DP

[see also readers comments at the bottom of the link for instructions on how to route the audio to USB]

Was able to transmit a BT audio stream from my iPhone 6 with no issues.

Should also work with other USB DACs.

If I remember raspberry has a Bluetooth receiver built in. That didn't work?

Only Pi3 has built in Wifi/BT not Pi 1 or Pi2 . Note that even with Pi3 with it's built-in BT, one needs to somehow autonomously accept incoming BT connections without user intervention and that's what the instructables article mentioned earlier comes in.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
