I have a problem with my denon AVC-A1D receiver that i bought recently from another HFV member.

Two days after i got it and I turned it on, I could hear sparking sounds coming from the inside, but the amp. was working fine. I took it to one of my speaker demoes and it played fine, but the sparking kept coming so I had to disconnect since I did not want to take any chances.
I took it to the denon service center here(ProFx -USK) and they said that the power filter caps had gone bad and those were causing the sparks. After around 3 weeks they sat that since its an old model they were unable to find the caps, but they will keep trying. According to him the 2 caps are rated 33000uf/150V. But the only caps I could find after I searched the net were 33000uf/71V used by other denon high end receivers like AVC-A1SE and AVR 5308, so I find the rating given my the service center suspicious.

Anybody have any experience with USK, and does anybody else know any other competent repair person in hyderabad.
Also help in locating the capacitors would be helpful. I bought the amp. without seeing it since I felt the price was good and the member assured me that it was in good condition, my bad luck

Hi

If you want why don't you check about the receiver with Roy who is the in charge for PRO FX Bangalore. He is a decent person and represents the best technical head here for Denon in India. Phone number 9880477309. Tell him Vinod, he might remember.

Hope this helps

Thanks Vinod, appreciate it. The profx guy here said that he is in touch with the bangalore team, I will call him anyway.

Know what's shocking, Denon india sources its spares from singapore, and if a model is more than 5 years old then getting spares is difficult. So if you buy a high end model or an entry model its the same. After 5 years you are on your own.

Can you get Caps from service center and post pictures here? 33000uf/150V does seem unlikely.

This is a list of Caps used in this AVR:

yeah, it was, i managed to download the service manual and its 71V, I called profx and told them that even some newer high end denon receivers were using these same capacitors. He said that the dimensions might be different, but I can use any similarly rated capacitor of the same size. I have to go to the service center tomorrow and measure the cap. and see if I can source it elsewhere.

Finally got the receiver repaired, sourced the capacitors from denon germany.
Only one capacitor leaked and was damaged, but the service center guys managed to break a pin on the other working capacitor while removing it. And they charged me bomb for it, even though I told them where the problem is and also sourced the spares, all they had to was remove and put the new ones.

Denon has used some quality components in this receiver, the original capacitors were made by Elna whereas the replacements that I bought were from Nichikon, part of their "Gold Tune" series.

Anyways quite happy in the end that I managed to get it repaired.

Congrats for having your receiver repaired !! Nichicon is no less a manufacturer than Elna, and you are in "good" company, rest assured and enjoy the audio!!!

Cheers

Hi Abhi,

Glad to know that your AVR got repaired after so much pain and difficulty.

All is well that ends well. Now time to enjoy your unit.

By the way what was cost involved? (BOMB!!!)

Take care

Vinod

They charged me Rs 2500, for just this replacement, he said that the normal charge is Rs. 3000. Apparently they have different service charges for different models.

Hi Abhi,

Very unfair of them, you have done all the hard work, sourced the Caps from Germany, and they charge you Rs 2500 just to solder it. Bloody hell!!!

Any way forget it and assume that you bought the receiver for 30,000 and it is still hell of a good buy!

Now enjoy it and let us know

Take care

Vinod

Thanks vinod, apparently this receiver has a very good dac built in, the PCM1704 from BurrBrown considered to be one of their best dac's. It was used till 2009. Naim uses it in its cd players and Mark Levinson in its DAC.
It's a sign magnitude dac unlike the regular delta sigma dac and I've read that its much less susceptible to jitter. I guess this means that I can pair it with budget dvd players and media players and not worry too much about jitter issues.

Hi Abhi,

I tell you what Abhi, I bought mine close to 50,000 and it is a much lower end model as compared to yours (AVR 3803) but the kind of performance it gives me is amazing, can be compared to almost a stand alone stereo amp. Its that good. Mind you, I also bought it pre owned at that time, but it had seen very little usage (About 1 month!!!)

Take care and enjoy your AVR

Vinod

Great to hear that u sorted it out finally....don't consider that 2.5k a huge loss, considering the quality of the amp.Enjoy the monster bro.!!

I found it to be high because it cost be 5K for the 2 caps, another positive in me sourcing the capacitors is because the repair guy said that if they source it, it might have cost 5K each.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
