I have a mass market HTIB and I was planning to connect my hard disk through the provided USB port on the LED TV. The HTIB doesn't support mkv file format. So I was thinking about getting Digital Optical/Coaxial Audio Converter since my TV doesn't have a coax.

However I'm not sure if my samsung LED TV will downmix the audio to 2 channels and then that would make the entire process a waste since I would only get virtual surround instead of true 5.1.

Getting a media player which does the decoding of audio is better option for you. Does your HTIB have a digital audio input? Coaxial or Optical?. This could solve your problem.

Its a Philips HTS 5520. It has digital coax. My Samsung LED TV has optical out. Suggest something reasonable.
