Hi......

Im a novice in the field of home theatres.....so please ignore my lack of knowledge.

I have a 26" sony HD ready LCD TV. Recently i have bought a PS3.

Now i have decided to get myself a home theatre system. The system shall be installed in my bedoom. Room size is 12X14 feet.

I am open to having either a HTiB or a separate AV receiver and 5.1 speaker system. My budget for the total system is 40-45K max, including cabling if it is to be bought separately.

I have auditioned sound bars of sony and samsung, but they didnt impress me.

Major use of the system will be music 80%, games and movies 20%.

Can nebody please suggest me a suitable system. Considering my room size, I wud prefer bookshelf speakers. My location is Kolkata and I wud prefer to get the system from kolkata only so that I dont have to run around for after sales service.

I dont have any idea of dealers of home theatre systems in Kolkata. i guidance in that regards shall also be helpful.:)

Hi, you can go for denon AVR 1312 + 5.1 speaker system. some of the good ones you can demo are:

JBL Cinema 300
Polk Audio RM6750
Wharfedale Moviestar 65+
Wharfedale diamond series 9.0 / 10.0
Boston Acoustics Soundware XS

You also have another option of building your system bit by bit. You can just get really good front speakers for now and later on perhaps get the centre, then the surrounds and the sub. This will ensure you get a much better balanced system. Some good front speakers within 20k are:

Wharfedale Vardus 400
Mordaunt Short Carnival 6
Polk Audio Tsi300

The receiver should cost about 20k, rest can be spent of the speakers. Do not go for HTIB or soundbars since you have a decent budget. Please demo the speakers thoroughly before you decide to buy.

How does yamaha RX-V471 fare against denon AVR 1312? Goin to audition both on monday with Boston Acoustics Soundware XS and Wharfedale Moviestar 65+...............

I suppose you must start with a good stereo setup since you listen to plenty of music. Spend your entire budget on that, you will not regret. Yes, you need a HT too but you know everything has a priority in life and I feel it is the amp and speakers you need first.. Yes, AVR can play music too but if you ask me, my Norge 1000+ Caiman DAC combination is far better for music than 471 that I have (for that matter any AVR in that price range). Now you decide!

My question may sound silly....but can u explain the diff between a dedicated amp and a AV receiver? doesnt the AV receiver has a built in amp? If i go for a separate amp, wat r my options for adding a AV receiver in future?

A dedicated amp is designed for only one purpose. To amplify two channels of audio. Nothing else.

An AVR has much much more tasks to do. Like amplifying 5/7 channels of audio, manage HD video inputs and outputs, perform audio processing like decoding, surround effects, playing through USB, managing speaker configurations, on screen displays, radio and a host of other conveniences.

So its between an all-rounder and a specialist. Both are required if you want movies and music respectively but decide on your priority and start the journey accordingly.

Meanwhile spend some time on this forum to gain knowledge. 10 hours of browsing topics of your interest is sufficient to decide what you require.:)

ps: Don't worry- an AVR has built in amp(s), without which you cannot use your speakers connected to it.

thanks santy........

so do we need more than one amplifier for a 2 front, 1 centre and 2 surround speakers??? or 1 amp will do the job?
