I want to connect a USB thumb drive/flash drive to my sony HiFi system that has aux-in but no USB port using an AV cable. I have tried to pictorially describe what i want to do. just that i don't know what DEVICE to use to achieve this. It should have a USB in and 3.5 mm out jack obviously. Please help point to the correct device and it would really help if link to amazon/flipkart where such device is sold is mentioned.

Thanks.

Hello,

You will need a DAC (digital to analog converter). This device takes digital input like usb or optical and output in 3.5mm or RCA; these are analog signals.

You can buy good DACs from headphone zone or amazon as well. Like Schiit modi or dragonfly.

Hey Hi,

Very Simple. Get an android box such as Cubetek 4K Portable Smart TV Box and you should be able to connect a Display via HDMI and your Sony with the AV Out port using AmazonBasics 3.5mm to 2-Male RCA.

What is the rest of your setup? Do you have a Display, TV or Monitor?

Thanks guys for the helpful pointers.

My requirement is very simple - i have a usb cruzer thumb drive with a huge collection of mp3 files, which i want to connect to a device which i can then connect to the aux-in port of the sony hifi box using a male-male AV cable. I hope iam clear. Please check the diagram i attached to my first post.

Do DACs have USB 2.0/3.0 ports to connect thumb drive?
The smart tv box mentioned above might work since it has both USB IN and 3.5mm out, but it seems to be an overkill for what i want.

I just need a device that has USB IN and 3.5mm out.

Hi

You need to regardless get a standalone MP3 player which has a USB slot.......you get a lot of china local brands being sold in the electronics market....i used an Amkette almost 6-8 years back to play audio and video files.....this was hooked analog to my amp....

Like this you may find same or better options over amazon or other sites...based on your budget...take a call...

You seem to be missing the point, that you need a USB Reader. Your Sony cannot read the files on the USB. It does not even know what it is. You can connect the USB via a USB to 3.5mm adaptor and then a 3.5mm female to RCA cable to Sony. But, what does Sony do with it? It is expecting a signal, who sends that signal to it? Thats why you need an interface that will read the USB drive and feed the signal to your Sony. The Media box I suggested fits this role perfectly. You can explore more such devices which will read the USB drive and feed the signal to your Sony.

Yes i know a mp3 player is required (that is what iam calling a "DEVICE" in my diagram) to read files off usb drive and feed analogue signal to sony. Since you mentioned a media player, i remembered i have an Asus Oplay Mini media player lying around. It has USB IN port and standard RCA out, no 3.5 mm port.

Maybe i can use this and route the yellow cable to TV and white and red to sony. This way i can choose the mp3 file to play on TV display and audio plays on sony?

By the way, this device suits my requirement to perfection, but not sure how durable it will be.

Hi,

Use the Asus Oplay mini media....it will be like the amkette.... based on its specs...get the relevant EP stereo to 2RCA cord or use the 2RCA to 2RCA cord to hook analog the player to the Sony.....i think then you are sorted without investment.....

Use the Video Out or HDMI out to the TV to view the list of files....

Yes i think that will work out. I will procure the 3.5mm to 2 RCA male cable as MaSh recommended above.

Thank you friends! I think iam sorted out without spending too much :)
