Are higher line up of KEF available in India? How are the prices compared to US/Europe prices? I am interested in their R and Reference Series.

Where are they available? What price? Any insights anyone?

R400B: 97,000.00 (Subwoofer)

NOTE: All prices are MRP in India, as per a brochure I got from ProFX about 10 days back. I'd picked up a digital coaxial cable from them, and with it, they gave me a big brochure with all the stuff they carry, with prices marked.

I'm not sure of global prices, but these should let you compare, based off prices from the Internet.

I once read a review of the 201/2 3 way reference bookshelf speaker against an usher be718. The review said even though the usher was 2500 usd, it stood up well against the 201/2 which is 5000 usd. The usher had slightly bumped lower frequency punch while the kef was more balanced (As a reference should be).

Cool, perfect, thanks!! Just what I needed, enough for me to allow comparison.

That was Wes Philip of Stereophile, one of the more reputed reviewer on the Stereophile panel. The speaker made it to class A recommendation. Not only that, 207/2 made it to the class A as well, albeit in Full range category. Review was done by someone no less than John Atkinson.

@ranjeetrain, think you should also consider KEF LS50. JA wrote a very favourable review in the last edition of stereophile

Thanks for the recommendation. They must be good speakers, however, they are not without limitations. There is audible compression in those designs. It's nothing to do with the manufacturer or models, it's science.

Hi Ranjeet,

Heard the R300's & R 700's with less than adequate electronics paired with 'em & found that these need serious amplification to make 'em sing. They have a nice velvety & warm sound. So if that kind of sound floats ur boat, the R series is it for you. Based on my brief demo, my personal choice from the R series would be the R300.

:)

That is true, but within their limitations, I think they perform the best atleast according to the reviews, and from what I have read about 'em, all agree that they really punch much above their weight

They may perform great for their size, but how good do they perform for its price. They may not be as strong as the similarly priced R300, which is a 3-way design with a dedicated low frequency driver. They LS50 may be more neutral than the R300, but the R300 may go much louder and deeper with wider sound stage.

Hi Dave,

I can understand your reasoning. Most of the speaker lines I have heard, the biggest of the line is not the best. It serves as a placeholder and serves well in certain kind of listening environments. I have also found that a speaker in the middle of the line works reasonably well for me.

R300 would be a good choice if R series. Let's see which one it will be.

I share the same view Ranjeet, I too have found the biggest of the line is not always the best.

I have heard kef r300 and ls50 thrice . To me R300 , the vocal is little behind and speaker is too romantic for my taste. Plus as per reports on net the bass can be a problem(too much ) in real room situation and you may have to bung the port with supplied plugs. As home demo is not permitted , it is difficult to take chance.Kef Ls50 , being raved by many magazines , have very good transparency , are flat also but somehow tone and texture of instruments and voice are not natural. Moreover Kef Ls50 , as new as they , are so soon also being found listed in used markets. Finally , I inferred that I am better of with my Klein Hummel as compared to both these kef spks.

What were the electronics they were paired with?
