Hello friends,
Wish you all a very happy new year 2014. May this year bring to you all lot of good music and equipment buys to enhance your musical enjoyment.

You will have to excuse me as I am late by almost 14 days for the new year wishes but due to the hectic travel schedule could not post it earlier though I have been a reading various posts as and when possible.

Getting back to the subject - I am looking for a used / old budget turntable in full and satisfactory working condition. Specifically looking out for a three speed one as recently I managed to get hold of some 78's through a senior music enthusiast and a thorough gentleman. The collection has some amazing old Indian classicals like Ustad Abdul Karim Khan - Mondar Baje! etc and MS's rare box sets etc along with the 78's of old movies and indian classicals.

My specific request for a budget rated turntable as I may be keeping this at my mumbai house and will not be in regular use as I don't live there at present. It will be used occasionally during my home visits.
Requirement is
three speed for 78 rpm,
preferably with universal mount cartridge for interchangeability.
Phillips / HMV preferred as hopefully will be within budget of INR 2.5 - 3.0K

I hope my HFV friends will be able to help me out in my quest for this turntable. Many thanks for all your assistance and support.

Hey There Kishor - Welcome to HFV and this lovely world of Vinyl. I think you should be able to find a Philips/HMV. May I suggest you open a wanted thread under the classifieds section.

I am assuming you are currently in Mumbai for this acquisition?

Cheers...

You may have to take the HMV route as most philips record players did not have the 78rpm option. At your price point, a Garrard is not in contention. However from my experience, Garrards are the best for 78s. The HMV record players like the Calypso, Popular, Fiesta, 1010, 1212 and 1515 came with the 78rpm option. Some of these even had the 16rpm option.

Here are some examples (no interest in any of the sales nor do I know the sellers, posting out of common interest): hmv record player

Thanks for your resposne and well wishes Record Player. Though I am not in mumbai right now for this acquisition i keep tarvelling frequently and buying if it suits should not be an issue.

Hi Reuben, thanks for the information on the players and the seller posts on HMV. I will give it a try. BTW can you please guide me on the Garrads prevailing pricing range. I do understad Garrads superiority and can give it try if it fits in with a slightly streched budget.

This is what my Garrard project cost me: http://www.hifivision.com/phono-tur...restoration-tragedy-ecstasy-5.html#post562335

I bought this TT to set it up for playing my 78s and 16s as my Technics TT can play only 33s and 45s. While this project was on, I acquired a mint Lenco L75 from Germany. The Lenco also comes with the 78 and 16 rpm option so I am currently in 2 minds whether to let this one go or not. After seeing it work, everyone's fallen in love with the nostalgic feel. This changer belongs to the classic range of Garrards and hence is quite unique.

Reuben,

The Garrad RC210 for sure looks quite impressive and very nice neat and clean as well. For a total spend of Rs 5,730 it is quite an achievement. I hope I get achance to do something like this in my lifetime. The only issue will be I am not a techie in this subject and won't be able to restore to the glory you have achieved.

Hemant, can you please provide me with the exact model nos for the Phillips and Garrads machines. I would like to check the compatibility and connections with my other components before I put in any Q's to you on this.
Thanks, Kishor

 very modest but you don't have to be a techie to indulge in electronics and restore audio equipment. Knowledge of physics that we study between standard 8 and 10 is more than enough. They key is to get some experience under the belt. Once that comes by, the sky is the limit.

Re: Looking for a budget turntable - UPDATE

Hi there,

An update on my quest for the budget TT. Yesterday I managed to get a Philips Model 533 through a family friend. Basic qualifying requirement was to put it in use and managed to convince the senior gentleman and requested my bro to collect it. Understand the machine may have a motor speed issue. Am yet to see it physically which has to wait until next month when I visit Mumbai. Don't know yet about the other issues if any like the stylus/cartridge and headshell...etc . Keeping my fingers crossed!

Upon checking will have to get back at our experts for issues if any. Meanwhile thanks much to all for the assistance and information provided to me.

Trying to locate the Users and Service Manual for the Philips 533 TT. so far no luck from the usual net sources like VE/HFE/AK and Manuals online etc. May I request for a copy if available with our friends please. Thanks.

Pic for the Philips 533 attached.

I have listened to this record player as a kid (our school had one and they used to teach us English lessons using 45 rpm records). It has a ceramic cart and sounds quite nice (as with all portable Philips equipment of those times). Although this was made by Philips in India, this is the exact replica (or may be, even rebadged) of the one made by Holland Philips. The lid doubles up as the speaker. If its in working condition, would be great for a start. The tonearm looked like it was from the space age, back then :)
