Try wd live tv it has built in wifi hdmi and almost all formats are supported,either decoded or pass thru. It cost almost 9k. And there are lost more out in market and older threads about the same .hope this helps .

Any idea whether the optical spdif out of Apple TV will sound as good as coax spdif out of Xonar Essesnce ST?

Can Apple TV play flacs? The wikipedia on Apple TV doesn't mention flac.

Hi sonosphere,

It is primarily for video use. If your purpose is audio, you may find it short of mark. I don't think it will beat the Xonar card. AFAIK it won't support FLAC.

If you want you can use a free FLAC to ALAC converter and test it.

Optical(toslink) is jittery by design and for high quality music reproduction, ignore this interface. It is impossible to get an optical interface to under 300ps of jitter.

If you must have a good music playing media player, look for the Cambridge NP30. It sounds pretty damn good when used with the coax digital out to an external dac.
