Hi fellow FMs,

After the successful builds of Class-D amplifiers like the TPA3118 chip based Amp, I built the TPA3251 chip based Amp. When this was successful, I was enthused enough to try the TPA3255 based chip. I'm happy to share with all of you that this last build was the most musical, transparent, noiseless and satisfying build of them all. It has reinforced my belief in Class D technology. Please be assured that this technology is the future.

Ingredients:

AMPLIFIER::
TPA3255 Evaluation module from Texas Instruments,
Meanwell LRS-48-360 SMPS,
Gold plated speaker terminals,
Power socket with EMI suppression,

PLAYER::
Raspberry Pi 3B,
Allo Boss DAC ver 1.2,
7in LCD Touchscreen,
Good quality shielded wire,

IFI Audio 5v 3A adapter for Raspberry Pi,
Linear regulated power supply for Boss DAC, 5V 5A, using LT1083 LDO regulator module bought from Amazon.in and 20000uf cap bank..

I have used two cabinets, one housing the Amp and Player, and another housing the linear power supply. The Meanwell is currently in the same box as the player.

The end result is fantastic. The best sound *I've heard* so far. Treble is clear, so is deep base. No need at all for contraptions like Tone Control. No question of any hum and hiss, no matter how close your ears are pressed to the speakers.
The cost is about Rs 35,000 for the whole thing. This system beats EmotivaAmp+Speakers and a DenonHT+KlipschFSTs on a simple test which consisted of listening to same tracks on each system.

I recommend other enthusiasts to build this one. It easy to build and sound is fantastic.

Great, if you don’t miss tone controls then you have certainly nailed it. I have no idea what a Class D sounds like. Can you share detail on the amp and power supply used and links to sources ? Thanks.

Hello Sanjeev,

That is some build you have got.
Why such high power amp? Not that it would be bad.....

Have you looked into the latest Smart amps from TI that involves I and V sense?
I may be trying one of those.

Regards,

Ravindra.

Hi,

I didn't build it for the power, but for its SQ. I had the option of taking the 3251 EVM which was lower power, but I just chose the latest module.

Which are the I and V sense modules?

Regards,
Sanjeev

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Did you order "Evaluation Module" directly from TI or any vendor from within India, if bought from TI, did you get Customs charged. (How much did they charge you, if you can tell).

I too wanted to use this amplifier but haven't heard a class D amplifier yet.

Some pics would be great.

Regards
Bilal

A friend brought the 3255 from the US. Other parts are easily available from Web sellers. To try out class D, you can build a 3118 chi based amp.

I will post pictures soon.

I got the module through a friend who carried it from US. I have a spare TPA3251 board from 3eAudio. If you want it, please PM me.

A tip for budding Class-D amplifier builders:

Keep the power supply as clean and as separate as possible. I tapped off the 5V supply to run a cooling fan, and the 'Live-ness' of the sound went down. Perhaps, the varying current draw of the fan motor altered the smooth power required to be fed to the Pi and DAC. When I used a separate adapter, the SQ was restored.
