My friend has asked me to help him select a good ICE for his new i10 !
I don't know much about audio systems (my expertise is in PC hardware:eek:), I need a lot of help !

Can I ask some basic questions here ?
Anyway, I'm gonna do it !:p
Here it is !

1. Head Unit

i. Other than the increased display size, does the 2 DIN HUs have any advantages compared to the 1 DIN ones ?
I mean bigger componets resulting in better SQ ?

ii. Does the onboard DACs and processors of the HUs are better than the high end portable music players like Sony A series Walkmans, Rockboxed Sandisks etc ?

iii. How important is the voltage output (2.5 vs 4 vs 5v) for the SNR ?
Is it worth the money it commands ?

iv. Is the HUs with built-in amplifiers inferior to dedicated ones ? I mean HU + seperate amp !

v. How much pre-amp outs one need for a 2 tweeters, 2 mid range and a big sub
Is one enough or should I get one with a dedicated sub-out (I don't know what I'm talking about !!:p)

2. Amplifier

i. Is a 50w x 4 channel is enough for that^^ setup ?

ii. How to actually wire them, I mean should I connect cross overs and HPF and LPFs for the mid and tweeters ?
Are they, the filters, tunable ?

iii. I heard a lot about "Impedance matching" but couldn't understand it
Is it relevant here ?

iv. Which class should I buy (A,B,D etc?)
BTW, I want a less distorted audio signal from the amp !
Power is a concern but its less important than SQ !!

v. How powerful should the amps be ?
The 'main' 4 channel stereo amp 4x50 W for the tweeters and mid speakers and a 'mono' amp with 500 W for the sub is ok ?

3. Speakers

i. I read a lot about the coaxial speakers are bad etc but are they that bad ?
They save a lot of space !!

ii. I know the size of the sub should be big (at least a10 inch dia) but, what about the tweeters and mid range speakers ?

iii. What about the sub enclosure ?
Best type of loading for subs for more accurate reproduction instead of power ?

4. Connector wires

i. The high end stuff is really costly ! So, are the worth it in a 30k system ?

ii. Is the thickness of gold plating in the connectors, I mean jacks important ?

AND finally, what about the electrical system of the car ?
Does the stock i10 need an alternator upgrade for this system?

BTW, if you can post some brands and better still, the specific model, it would be great !
Right now, its..
HU - not decided
Amp - Pioneer GM4300F - 6k, Alpine MRP-M352 - 4.5k (from naptol.com lol !)
Speakers - don't know
Cables - no idea

Need help

i would say it doesn't matter whether its 1DIn or 2DIN player all matters is the number of RC outs and RC output volts, if you have a 2 RC outs with 2V or 4V is more than sufficient

2. Amplifier

i. Is a 50w x 4 channel is enough for that^^ setup ?

i would suggest u get the install done by some professional and don't take risk on it. as u mentioned i10 i don't think u require a mono for sub
buy a good 4 channel amp connect 2 out of amp to front components and the other 2 output to sub in a bridged mode and rear speakers directly powered by HU which would have a good effect on i10 car :)

3. Speakers

i. I read a lot about the coaxial speakers are bad etc but are they that bad ?

it would be cheaper and better if you use a coaxial as your planning to get a sub the oval speakers effect would be overrun by sub hence i feel its a dead investment if your getting a oval speakers

4. Connector wires

audision is good wiring kit which can be used

if you mention your budget and type of music which u would listen it would be helpful for audio gurus to help you out :)

i am just a starter not an expert :) i have made suggestion based on my experience which i have faced in order to get an ICE for my SWIFT car which is on its way :(

i would say it doesn't matter whether its 1DIn or 2DIN player all matters is the number of RC outs and RC output volts, if you have a 2 RC outs with 2V or 4V is more than sufficient
OK, so two 2.5v preouts are ok !
Can you suggest a good HU with two 2.5v or 4v preouts ?

But the most amps in the HUs are 50wx4 and 50w is too low for a sub with a small enclosure IMO !

I have two questions regarding the crossovers !

1. If I use the HU's amp and give it to the tweeters and mid-speakers, I have to use a passive LPF to filter freqs less than, say 400hz, right ?

2. Should I use crossovers for tweeters and mid-speakers to seperate high and lower frquency signals ?

3. Then, I should use an active one to filter the higher freq. signals from the HU's pre-out to the mono amp for the sub. Is it correct ?
Or does the HUs have a dedicated sub-out ?

audision is good wiring kit which can be used
Ok !:)
Thanks for the heads up !

if you mention your budget and type of music which u would listen it would be helpful for audio gurus to help you out :)
I mentioned the budget in the title, its 40 max !
Would be great if I can get all the stuff at 30k BTW :D

Also, the ICE is not for me, its for my friend !
He's a bit too...Japanese !
J-pop, anime, manga...that sort of stuff. He also like hip-hop and lots and lots of bass !
i am just a starter not an expert :) i have made suggestion based on my experience which i have faced in order to get an ICE for my SWIFT car which is on its way :(
I really appreciate you help man and congrats on the new Swift !
Its a nice car (the diesel engined one, lots of torque !)

OK, so two 2.5v preouts are ok !
Can you suggest a good HU with two 2.5v or 4v preouts ?
i would recommend KENWOOD or JVC but it also depends whether you need a 2 DIN player or 1 DIN player

i suggested you to use an amp for front components and sub :)

Cerwin Vega HED600.4 this is the amp i am planning to get in my car
this is a 4 channel out amp consider HU has 2 RC outs. installers connect 1 RC out to amp and then using the 4 out of amplifies 2 channels are used to power up your front components and then the remaining 2 channel would be bridged and used to connect sub :) when u bridge the 2 channel to 1 you would get 150 rms which is more than enough for an i10 IMO :) :)
you need not worry about how u have to connect with LPF or etc your installer will do that for u but make sure he powers your component with your amp not the rear coaxial:) :) :)

the other RC out of the HU is used to connect to the co-axial 50w out for a rear coaxial is more than sufficient :) :)

if you are planning to use an mono amp for sub then you need a HU which has 3 RC out
1st for front components
2nd for the rear coaxial
3rd for the mono amp to connect sub to

I mentioned the budget in the title, its 40 max !

these are the options which m looking for u can take the same setup exclude mono from both the setup which will reduce 10K from each and its in ur budget 40k :)

you can get all the setup for 30K also but you have to go for JBL or Pioneer :)

JBL and pioneer can't be compared with the brands which i have suggested its far more good products than JBL and pioneer

I really appreciate you help man and congrats on the new Swift !
Its a nice car (the diesel engined one, lots of torque !)

yep!! its a diesel :) thanks :)

Thanks for the reply !
Kenwood 5120 2Din Mp3 Player
From where you are getting it for 8k ?

BTW, why can't I use the amp in the HU ?
I was thinkin of using the HU amp to power the rest of the components and a mono amp for the sub !
Isn't it enough ?

Also, if a manufaturer say 50W x4, it means 50W per channel ?
I thought that its the total output, ie., 12.5x4 = 50

BTW, where is the place to get these things ?
Please recommend a reliable online store !!

Thanks in advance:)

Which HU to select ?
Confused !!

Blaupunkt London MP27 MP37 MP3 Player, 4 channel preouts F, R and Sub, bluetooth, iPhone (no USB ???) - 9k
Pioneer DEH-P4200UB, F, R and Sub preouts, USB, iPhone - 8k

i am getting it from local installer in bangalore :)

output of HU won't be so powerful and effective if u use an amp its sounds great so most of them insist on using 4 channel amp for sub and components.

if u connect speakers from HU and woofer from mono i personally feel that your sub would dominate your speakers and vocal won't be clear enough or audible enough :)

i am not sure about this :(

i am not sure about this as i don't buy online usually :)

Thanks in advance:)

welcome :) but i am a noob just crosscheck once :)

I guess I'm making a wrong choice in selecting the HU first !
I think I need to select the speakers first and buy the amps and the HU with the rest of the money !

SO, please recommend Front components + Rear Co axials !
And a good sub too !

So, nobody uses the HU's speaker outs ?

What about this :
Front components - Seperate amp using the Front preout of the HU
Rear coaxials - HU's amp
Sub - active sub (how are they vs sub + amp)
I saw two active subs in the my budget range at the store
1. Bazooka BTA10100 10" enclosed active sub, 100w - 12k
2. Kenwood KSC-SW10 7" dual, enclosed active sub, 150w - 9.8k

Update:
component sys. - Pioneer TS-D720C (6k)
Coaxials for rear - Pioneer TS-G622 (2.9)
amp - Alpine PMX-F640 (5.6k)
sub (active) - Kenwood KSC SW10 (9.8k)
HU - Pioneer MP3 CD Receiver USB DEH-5490SD (9.8k)

So, the total is 34.1k !

y are u looking for an active sub??? which has only 150W? when u use an 4 channel amplifier your sub would get 150rms and the components also get the amplified power and sounds great :) think abt it rather than investing on some useless things

here goes some spec see

rockford fosgate prime 6.5" components 6000rs
rockford fosgate prime 6.5" components 3100rs
rockford fosgate subwoofer 6500rs
rockford fosgate 300-4 4 channel amp 10000rs
total 25600
box+ wiring=3000rs
total 28600

now decide a decent good looking HU of kenwood or JVC for 8-12K

which would be 40K in your budget trust me you won't regret getting a rockford fosgate speakers and sub

JVC 700Bt has 3 RC out 4V with blue tooth check this if u r fine :)

pioneer and JBL is not so worth if u listen to rockford u won't even utter J from your mouth :p

Hi Swift2012,

Seems you have installed RF in your car. Please can you tell me the sound signature of the RF. I am basically looking for a warm sounding speakers, something which does not cause fatigue or make ear piercing sound. I don't know where I can demo them in Pune. Hence checking with you. Thanx in advance !
