On the suggestion of forum members here is a thread where we can post info on upcoming concerts and live performances we are attending. This is so that others can also benefit and maybe attend or find if the same group is visiting their city.

Hopefully this will be of use to members of our community!

I'd love to go if there's company

I got info from a friend in Bangalore that
Just heard from a friend of mine that Wolfgang Haffner is playing at Windmills Craftworks, Whitefield, Bangalore this Friday Nov 2nd.

http://www.windmillscraftworks.com/event/wolfgang-haffner-band

.

I was also going to post the same info (ex KB).

Bangalore guys, go for it. I just came back from the concert. They're a very tight band and they played a very tight set, mostly from their latest album Kind of Spain. They are basically four virtuosi.

Addendum: it's a free event organised by the local Goethe Institute. You just need to write an email to your local Goethe Institute asking for tickets.

At Shisha Cafe, Pune. The line up on 23 November looks really good. I can't go as I'm traveling on those days, but some of you may be interested. By the way, Shisha Cafe provides a lovely ambience with their Mojito pitchers, draft beer and Berry rice and kebabs :)

DACH

Andrej Prozorov - saxophones

Abhinav Khokhar-bass

Mathias Ruppnig - drums ,

DACH is a half Austrian, half Ukrainian ensemble rooted in Jazz, Folk and Improvised

Music.

Before the group was formed in Berlin in 2012, the members of the quartet performed

and learned from giants of Jazz like Joe Zawinul, Dave Liebman & Bill Frisell.

This is DACH’s second time in the Indian subcontinent. All four members of the band

contribute with their compositions to create a creative and contemporary jazz sound

with a respect to the tradition of improvised music.

DACH’s latest Album RADIO LIBERTY is an artistic response to the Ukrainian revolution.

„Radio Liberty inevitably leads to bursts of euphoria“ - Bird is the Worm (Music Magazine,

USA)

SUPERGOMBO

performing on thu 22nov -8:45pm

Line up :

Etienne Kermarc -Bass

Riad Klaï -Guitar

David Doris - Percussions

Aurélien Joly - Trumpet

Jerome Bartolome - Saxophone

Romain Nassini - Keyboards Wendlavim Zabsonre - Drums

SUPERGOMBO is an exciting new offshoot of the cultural blend made in France. Their Afrofunk sound is probably coming from the Tout Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and the Headhunters, blended with influences such as Senegalese Mbalax, Congolese Soukous, Funk and Jazz.

SUPERGOMBO’s seven musicians also know how to slow down and take their time. They borrow other influences from Bamako to Ouagadougou, with a stopover in la Guillotière, a lively Lyon neighborhood known for its own cultural mix.

SUPERGOMBO really wants to take us all on a trip and get us on the dance floor . From his father’s years in Africa, Etienne Kermarc inherited the West African sounds – which he blended with his own jazz idiom. His fellow travelers are Aurélien Joly and Nacim Brahimi with their horns, Romain Nassini and Riad Klaï for the harmony, David Doris from Reunion Island and Wendlavim Zabsonré from Burkina Faso on percussions and drums – all of them involved in the writing and arrangements.

SUPERGOMBO offers an African suite that glides and shimmies its way from East to West, and from the West Indies to the Far East!

It should come as no surprise that SUPERGOMBO enjoys using rhythmic repetition and sometimes flirts with electronic trance. Their music never forgets its roots, though, nor the stories they tell.

MIND FLO

Performing on friday 23 Nov 8:45pm

Line up
Simon Moullier - Vibraphone
Sharik Hasan - Piano/Synthesizer
Alexander L. J. Tóth - Bass
Anthony A. Tóth - Drums

The birth of MND FLO began as a trio between Pianist, Sharik Hasan, Bassist Alexander L. J. Tóth, and

Drummer Anthony A. Tóth. For them, it was one of those stories where they met and everything just clicked from the start. The trio originally met in Boston, while studying at the Berklee College of Music - a time of endless musical experimentation, and the beginning of a meaningful friendship that has lasted throughout the years.

The rich heritage between the members of MND FLO is something that's highly influential to all of them, and they often find themselves being asked about where they all come from. Hailing from vastly different parts of the world including India, France, Trinidad, Hungary, and Canada, MND FLO has found a never-ending pool of inspiration to draw from within this diversity. "To us, one of the most beautiful things about creating music is digging into those roots and incorporating elements of your own culture within the music".

Another concept that the group aims to achieve within their music is the idea, or interpretation of what they like to call "Flo". They describe Flo as a feeling where everything fits into place, allowing for a sense of seamlessness and being fully immersed in the music. Aside from music, they say Flo can relate to everyday life. There's Flo in the way you dress, there's Flo in the way you speak, it's in the mind, and it's almost always present when the four of them come together.

AHIMSA
Performing on sat 24th Nov 7:15pm

Line up
Matthias Müller - Guitar
Dominique di Piazza - Bass
Andrea Marchesini - Drums
Neyveli S Radhakrishna-Double violin

AHIMSA is a four-piece world music ensemble.
The group grew out of a chance meeting in 1999 of Munich-based guitarist Matthias Muller and South Indian violinist S. Radhakrishna, which blossomed into friendship, mutual admiration and eventually a musical partnership. With the addition of two ace Indian percussionists and a bassist, the line-up of Ahimsa was born, and their two albums to date, `Seven Steps to Liberty’ and `What is the Nature of Spirit?´ have acquired broad critical acclaim.
In 2012 Ahimsa developed the desire to change the line-up and become more ‚jazzy‘ and more ‚modern‘ and ended up with the new Ahimsa Quartet featuring world-class bass-player Dominique DiPiazza( John Mclaughlin, Bireli Lagrene, Nelson Veras etc... ) and Andrea Marchesini on drums who performed with Jonas Hellborg and Shawn Lane ….
In Ahimsa’s fiery compositions, the complex rhythmic structures and raga improvisations of Carnatic music are extemporaneous, yet meticulously balanced with the harmonic diversity of western classical music and the unlimited expression of jazz. The band creates daring and compelling explorations, their musicianship is superb and their live performances are incendiary.
Attesting to their dazzling virtuosity, the band’s individual members have collaborated with a veritable who´s who of modern music-from Pandit Ravi Shankar, John McLaughlin, Shawn Lane, Dr. L. Subramaniam to Bireli Lagrene and Pandit V.M. Bhatt-to name just a few.

This concert turned out to be one hell of concert. I almost did not go. It would have been such a loss if I hadn't.
Astor Piazolla's Meditango for Bandoneon and Orchestra showcased Dario Polonara on the bandoneon with the Chamber Ensemble of the Symphony Orchestra of India conducted by the resident conductor Evgeny Bushkov. The bandoneon is sort of a miniaturised version of the accordion, typically supported atop the knee while seated. Its throw belied its small size. It can get raucous when called for. The Meditango is essentially a concerto for the bandoneon.

Piazolla's The History of Tango was performed by the SOI's chamber ensemble. Four different violinists performed solo parts on the four movements. A very beautiful performance by the SOI.

The real deal came after the interval. Like composer Astor Piazolla, composer Martin Palmeri is Argentinian too. Maestro Palmeri himself introduced the thought behind composing the Misatango and he played the piano (as he did on the Meditango earlier in the evening). The heady mixture of the tango tune and mass initially threw me off. It was such a new kind of sound to my ears that I didn't know what hit me. It took some hearing to get into the groove but once you do that it was hard not to appreciate the beauty of the composition which was predominantly in the minor chords. The piano sound was heavily dominated by the lower notes, providing a solid bass underpinning. Together with the single double bass in the orchestra, the bass was brooding, ominous and often threatening. The bandoneon shone again in this piece too. But this being a choral mass the real highlight belonged to the ladies of the Goa University Choir (numbering about 32) and the men of The Bangalore Men choir (numbering about 30). The mass (in Latin) is a pretty complex choral composition and the combined choirs mastered it. Very, get laudable performance indeed. Goa University Choir even had a soprano and she delivered a credible performance. I felt blessed to hear an Indian soprano. I would put the overall performance of this concert in the same ballpark as the much grander Verdi Requiem which the SOI had performed few years back. It was that good.

Tall praise Josh!! I was very curious about this performance being a fan of Piazolla myself.
Very nice to hear about the Goa University Choir and the Bangalore Men's Choir too.

Looks like I need to make a trip to Mumbai this month - Celebrate Bandra is also underway.

Regards.

PJBC PROGRAM ON SUNDAY 9 DECEMBER AT GYAN ADAB, PUNE

The program will feature Thelonious Monk. A presentation on the life and times of this enigmatic musician by T M Hosangady will be followed by a live performance on Monk’s compositions by the Aubrey Dias quartet.

Monk is considered the Genius of Modern Music. His creative work spanned the period from the early 50s to the 70s. Considered quirky in his time, his playing style featured dissonances and angular melodic twists His compositions were consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano. And yet he was completely musical. His distinctive look and demeanour along with his ‘Monkisms’ completed this unique artiste.

Mon’s image and his music have grown multiple times since his passing in ’82. His challenging compositions are now a holy grail for aspiring jazz musicians. Many have tried to imitate Monk but he remains a musician impossible to copy.

So coupled with a live performance on Monk’s compositions. This is guaranteed to be an engaging session. Bring your family and friends along.

Went to this event "October Octaves"

The first segment was a fantastic performance Nagara troupe headed Shri. Nathulal Solanki.
Rajasthani folk music with Nagada/Nagara (kettle drum), Sarangi, Harmonium, Morchang (played with the mouth), and Khartal (clap boards).
They played many traditional folk numbers by themselves.

They were joined by Giridhar Udupa on Ghatam for a few numbers, followed by Arun Kumar (drums) and Keith Peters (Bass guitar).
Through the fusion medley, they belted out Dama Dam Mast Qalandar and Nimbuda to get the crowd pulse going.
The finale was a mind blowing rendition of Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram on account of Gandhi Jayanthi.
Nagada (instruments), Ghatam, Drums, Bass Guitar with vocals were simply a delight to hear.
It started traditional, slow paced with few instruments, but went up tempo and grand to a frenzied finish

If this Nagada troupe comes to your town, don't miss it. It is raw, unhinged and the vocalist is simply "wow".

Cheers,
Raghu

After a gap of 2 years October Octaves rocked again in 2021.
Chennai based band Staccato preformed this time. They are really good and fun.
They had this wonderful choir that gelled with many tracks giving them a new sense of scale.

October Octaves is an annual music event held in October every year in South Bangalore.
Normally held in an auditorium of about 500-800 people.

Cheers,
Raghu
