Panasonic will cut production of LCD and plasma panels for tvs in 2013 true/rumor

I think its the right thing to do for Panasonic, they are losing a lot of money in the TV business and their market share has dropped quite steeply over the past few years, so chances of turning things around are very thin.

OLED plans are still on though, in co operation with Sony and AU Optronics

Well the demand for flat panels tvs are slowing down and for panasonic its plasmas sales have plummeted due to competition from lcd/led and samsung own plasmas.

For panasonic its main revenue in tvs are from plasmas, its lcd tv business as been non profitable. They always considered lcds as secondary in their tv business and now its way behind in lcds,it has also sold its lcd manufacturing plant to Japan Display a joint consortium of Sony,Toshiba,Hitachi and further backed up by the Japanese Government which owns 70% of the new company.

As far as OLED tv from panasonic they will possibly commence OLED production only in 2014. Panasonic has no experience in OLED,its doing a joint partnership with Sony which has lot of experience in OLED.

But i highly doubt they will pullout of the tv business, considering sharp still exists in tv business and panasonic have a higher market share then sharp.

This is why i said in the other thread, for a person who is looking to keep his TV for another 5 years at-least he should be made ware of the fact that their might be next to nothing After sales support with Panasonic looking to wind its TV business up. Yes theoretically they will s say they will provide after sales support to their customers but how much of that will happen practically is anybody's guess.

Both Sony and Panasonic have a single digit market share - Sony with about 8% and Panasonic at about 6%. Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp, etc. are even worse off. The market is dominated by Samsung (28%) and LG (about 15%). Chinese companies such as Haier are increasing the market footprint.

Japanese compaies are making heavy losses.

It is expected that by 2015, CRT TVs will be more or less extict (with miniscule presence in South Asia). Plasma will be dead by that time in the consumer area (it may continue in professional displays). LG and Panasonic have already scaled down the PDP production and that is reflected by the lack of stock in the Pana brandrooms and elsewhere. LED TVs will be the mainstay for the next 5 years and LCDs will find choice with the lower cost segments.

Samsung is slowly but surely eating up its competitors one by one. What i do not like about Samsung is the Panel lottery especially in the lower and mid range models. With Sony and Lg at-least you know which panel you will be buying. The difference between Lg and Sony at this time in point being LG is on an upward swing globally although far behind Samsung but Sony seems to have hit a wall and are not progressing the way they would like to. LG and Samsung look better prepared for the future with their OLED models already up and running while Sony is farcically hanging on to the glimmer hope of hanging on to the notion that 4k TV's will bail them out. 4K TV's will NEVER become mainstream simply because the lack of content and the massive bandwidth requirements being the major hindrance. LG managed to cover some ground be cleverly backing the passive 3D yet also concentrating on the OLED's. It's about time Sony pulled up its socks and do a reality check.

The Japanese companies all are facing market losses in tvs spaces thanks to the two korean companies.I don't know where they went wrong,

We all know Sony was late to flat panel tech, they thought their crt tvs would still be bought compared to the then flat panel tech which had inferior picture quality. When they realized the rapid market shift to flat panels They tried first with both plasmas and lcds but stuck to lcds.

Sharp was no 1 in 2005 world wide lcd sales.
A year later Sony moved to no 1 position in 2006 to 2007.

Samsung took over the lead in 2008 with cheaper price tag and in 2009 samsung pulled a hefty lead thanks to samsung marketing by launching the so called "LED TV" which where just edge led based lcd tvs .People even today think its a completely different tech. They where very aggressive with the amount of LED tv ads.

Lg quickly followed samsung with the word "LED tv " they where still trailing behind Sony till about early 2011.

Sony was one of the last to market there tvs as LED tv which they started in early 2011 ads ,even though they launched the worlds first RGB based backlight lcd way back in 2004.Even today there websites doesn't have a category for LED tv ,all are just under LCD TV.

Sharp is pretty much dead they invested millions in the worlds first 10th generation lcd manufacturing facility, where Sony also had a stake and was a big customer for sharp panels.
Now Sony has pulled out of the joint venture with sharp and even before that happened Sony stopped using Sharp panels .The UV2A tech of sharp failed to deliver. Now Sharp has no customers for tv size panels except philips.

Toshiba and Hitachi don't have the name or performance to challenge samsung, sony or lg.

Panasonic which is a big corporation where reluctant to invest in lcd tech.We now know where they are potentially heading.

Pioneer never had a product that could compete in price and they quit the tv business.

The two korean companies make quite a bit of money by selling panels, even though they both buy panels from Taiwanese companies like AUO,CMO,CPT etc .So they are still making profits.Unlike Sony, toshiba, sharp they also sell plasmas.

same thing happened in tablets,phones.

Its only in cameras(canon, nikon,Sony) and video cameras(Sony, panasonic) the Japanese have a firm lead compared to the two koreans.

Yes koreans have taken a lead but it doesnt mean they cant be beaten. The cost is a big problem for the japanese companies. What panasonic is doing is more of a cost cutting and i dont think they will quit the tv business. They just need to market their products better.

While not too sure about LCD business but according a Panasonic employee, Panny is quiting the Plasma TV market. Still, take it with a grain of salt :)

The current plant is being shutdown and its being shifted to other factories within japan, some of which where acquired during the purchase of Minolta camera business.
Most of its regular lenses and DSLR cameras ,NEX cameras,TVs are made in Thailand and Malyasia since the labor in japan is very high.
