Hello Guys!

This is my first post on this forum so first of all thank you for grant my access.
I live in Kolkata (nearby airport) and working in IT, in home theater I do not have much experience not an audio profile as well.
Let me explain little more about my interests in music and movies, hence this is a forum where people are specialist in sound technology or much more experience than me at least.

Music:
I used to listen: (mostly on my head phone on my old q25, computer speakers or in tv)
Genre I like as below
Trance: psychedelic trance, progressive trance, electronica and sometime house and ambiance music.
Instrumental: flute (classical ragas by hari prasad chaurasia), santoor (by pandit shivkumar sharma), pop and classical popular songs on piano and violin.
Rock: soft rock and alternative mostly also I like to listen Sufi and folk songs and old Hindi and Bengali movie songs of Kishore Kumar, Hemant Mukherjee, RD, Asha ji, Lata ji and rest.

At the same time, my wife plays classical guitar, so we listen few ragas some time on guitar (mohan bina) …again over the head phone or on our tv.

Movies:
I am not a big fan of movies and tv series but my better half is and she like suspense thrillers, drama and horror movies, I have to give her company and being doing that I am also start love watching movies.

Source of this music or movies are mostly online, in mp3 or lossless format downloaded or from amazon prime music /videos, Netflix, YouTube etc.

I do not have any music system at home so would like setup a HT which will enhance my movie watching and music listening experience.

My usage will be 60% movies and 40% music.

Again guys many thanks for such a good forum, last few days I went through few posts which are very informative, specially from this forum I was able make out at Kolkata where I can go and have some audition experience. Today I went for an audition of a HT setup with B&W speakers and Denon AVR, it pretty impressive at sollfege but very costly, out of my budget.

So guys please help to setup my first home theater with 5.1.2 Atoms sound system. My budget is 1 lac. (I can stretch 20k more max).

Rome size:
I do not have a dedicated HT room, my room size is quite small 120sq feet approx., L12 X W10 X H10 feet with concrete ceiling. Do not have much space to accommodate floor standing speakers as well.

I've done some research and read few of threads on this forum and
I've narrowed down to the following:
  1. A/V receiver: Yamaha RX-V 585
  2. Speakers: No idea which ones. But, I need speakers
2 left right bookshelf front, like polk s20
2 small surround rear like Polk TL2
1 slim center channel Polk s35 or any smaller one.
2 ceiling like Polk rc60i for atoms
1 SUB like Polk psw 10

Or should I go with a generic 5.1 speaker system like Polk audio tl1600 or elac cinema 5 + 2 ceiling speakers , but will they produce good sound for music listening experience, will center channel able to produce enough power. I bought, sony HDR 4k KD8300D tv two years back, picture quality is good but the sound is not at par, specially dialog are not that clear.
So currently am very confused state, please help!
Thank you All.

You are on the right track.
I would suggest to go with same receiver with fronts but change the surrounds and atmos to polk owm3 which are quite versatile.
For subwoofer, stretch the budget a bit and go for bic pl200 or xtz 10.17. You may start with 5.0 and add the sub later. Or skip the atmos speakers now and add them later.

Hi Dr_rocket,

Thanks for your suggestion , I have checked owm3 reviews, its pretty impressive and I will try to use them as surrounds and atoms, though i have a doubt, how to fix them in concrete ceiling? Please advice if possible.

Reg Sub-woofer, yes sub-woofer take most major part of entire system as I understand but the suggested one is beyond my budget my room is 1200 cubic feet so if you able to suggest something under 20k.

Hi All,

Today i visited Auditro, Owner of Auditro is very good and kind person he gives me his valuable time even on weekend sunday, I also like the place specially he has a nice fish only marine tank at his store and being an aquarium hobbyist it attracts me a lot, any ways he showed me Morel PRIMO 5.1 Satellite (hence I am in a tight budget of 1lac) and I heard the music and few movie clips, its is good but i did not like it much hence mid range and depth is not up to the mark as compare to B&W(which I heard last saturday, may be its not a good comparison). Then we discussed about the setup what I am planning for and below are the result of it.

Polk S20 - 24k
Polk CSI a4-16k (demo pc little old one but good in condition)
Sub dsw pro 440- 18.7k
yamaha rx v585 45k
Polk TL 1 surround 9 k
Polk RC60i 13k
wire 5k
total around 1.35 lac + installation.

Sorry to say I find it little expensive this same avr my friend bought at Bangalore few days back in 39k, do you guys think this price range is good or should I also evaluate it else-ware.

Hence I am looking for mainly Polk speakers, should I check with Polk dealers or in kolkata who can give best price for Polk please share/pm if you have any contacts.

Speakers :
A pair of Polk s20
Two Pairs of Polk OWM3 surround + Atmos ( as suggested by dr_rocket)
One slim center channel Polk s35 or shall I go with Polk CSI a4
One SUB Polk dsw pro 440.

And at the same time for AVR(yamaha rx v585) where can I get more decent price at kolkata.

Please help.

You should be able to get a 5.1.2 capable AVR for around 50K.. Pioneer LX 303 is an 5.1.4 capable AVR, and can be had for little more with scouting around dealers / online.. Always good to have more channels..

Get to 5.1.4 for once and enjoy movies from streaming services..

Look for speakers that are shallow in depth, wall mountable as it will not occupy much floor space (or) not obstruct you moving around the room..

If you don't have false ceiling, you may consider Sonodyne 3540 height speaker for front heights and rear heights.. Since you are from Kolkatta, you should be able be get one or two places to audition them..

Visit profx, they are authorized dealers of Polk and yamaha in Kolkata. Also inquire pricing of receiver with Yamaha direct showroom.
I think S15 should be adequate. S35 pairs well with S15/20. Other good option is s30. And if you skip the atmos speakers for now then you can save enough for a decent sub. Any sub below 30k is not going to cut it, in my opinion. A decent sub is much more important than atmos speakers for good HT experience.
Owm 3 can be fixed on concrete ceiling. They have versatile fixing arrangements.

Hi Monotosh, first of all, welcome to the forum!
I live geographically close to you(Dum Dum). And know that there is no good place in north Kolkata for audition. But, can suggest you two good places.

1. Auditro in Park Street. I got my entire setup from here. The owner is very helpful and informative. He has the largest number of premium brands in Kolkata available with him. Also, he is the sole distributor of Sonodyne in Kolkata.
2. Harmonie Audio - New Alipore.

I'd suggest that you avoid the TL1600. It's a very good value for money product - no doubt. But, distortions are there and lacks refinement. It was there in my shortlist. But after listening it in ProFX, I decided not to go for it. For your budget, I'd suggest the following combos. Source - HIFIMART and AVstore.

1. WHARFEDALE DX-2(5.1) + DENON AV RECEIVER(550BT) 5.1 HOME THEATRE PACKAGE - 73K(you have to be content with 5.1).
2. Marantz NR1608 AV Receiver(43K) + Elac Cinema 10(73K) - 116K. You can add ceiling speakers later.

Dealers keep used AVRs with them. Look if you can get a good one within 30-35K. That should leave you with 80-85K for speakers.
For music, floorstanding speakers provider better soundstage. If you can, go with two floorstanders and a good center channel - do not compromise on the center channel for movies. You can add Surrounds like JBL Control 1 for 10K later on. Don't bother on the surrounds as much as the fronts. Here are my suggestions.

1. Dali Zensor Vokal + Zensor 5(Pair) - Should come @ 75K after discounts
2. Q Acoustics 3020i(27K) + Q Acoustics 7000C(18K) + Q Acoustics 3010i(16K) + Bic America F12(34K) - 85K. Should come down to 80K depending upon the dealer and your bargaining skills
3. Sonodye Prime H12(97K). But, you can get it within 80K post discount.

Finalized anything?
Yes.. 2x3020i, 1x 3090c, sub 3070s( for space constant going for this sub) , surround and for high 6 x owm3 .. Reciver Denon 4500 or something if you can suggest coz after checking lot of review I understand until we have 4 high channels Atmos will not be that effective..so I want a 11 channel Avr , 5.1.4.. and little more money ..:)

4500 alone will cost you more then a lakh. You have quoted a budget of 1.2L. For your room size a 5.1.2 will be sufficient for atmos but it’s always better to get an 9 channel avr. Marantz 6013 is an excellent choice but if you want to go for 4500 and willing to extend your budget go for Denon 4500. It is a beast of an avr. I have 4500 and currently using a 5.1.2 set up and it’s very good for atmos

SR6013 m getting at 85k but it has small display that is the only concern I have with it.

I have switched off the display in my Denon 4500. Reason is I have kept the avr below my tv and It’s a big disturbance for me. IMO you don’t need it as you will have on screen display. 85k is a very good price and if you don’t need auro 3d 6013 is more then enough. Still if you want 4500 and have the budget by all means go for it.

I was also skeptical about buying my SR5013 bcos of it's tiny display, but since other features outweighed this, I took the plunge. Never regretted. Actually, most of the times you won't be looking much at that display as all the information can be seen on your TV, it shouldn't be a deal breaker. In fact, I had to set the display to dim as it was just below my TV and in a dark room, it is a disturbance. Sr6013 is a powerful AVR. All the best.

In Auro 3d , I am not interested at all but that little display...

All of your relevant options will be visible on your TV/screen, that display has almost no use except when your TV is switched off and you are listening to music, even then it is more than enough to actually see which volume you are playing at. In my opinion if you are letting the Marantz go over the tiny size of that 'display' then that is a mistake.

Ok, logically saying nothing, I just like an informative display on the equipments..I know sounds childishly but it is what it is..coz I do not need 125 w coz I m going for little bookshelf spekers and little surround..I dnt need Auro 3D, I will never go for 7.1.4 so pre amp not need , ....practically I can't say no to sr6013 with that price...but the display is what turns me down ..7013 is more expensive..

Exactly what I am thinking bout when listening to music ...from a pen drive or hdd connected to avr how do I navigate specific songs or the folders and I like to see track information as well how I will get that....I do not want to turn on the TV that time coz i like to listen music in dark room.. give me a solution of that.. with sr6013, .I will consider it.

You do have a point there, I was under the impression that you will be using a separate player for your content, that is what most do.
I am not sure but the Marantz hi-fi app likely will let you control the media playback from phone or tablet.
If music is your priority and that too digital music then you will soon need a DAC instead of relying on the receiver. That however is quite a ways off at this point, pickup what you like, start the journey.

I was wrong... With installed heos apps, media can be browsed .. from mobile or pad..
