My TV is hisense a71f 55inch and as per Specs it is, 4K UHD (3840 x 2160p), Dolby Vision and HDR

When I have to watch any 4k video file from my PC, I have been connecting the TV to PC via HDMI and playing the video on VLC (basically TV as external monitor).
Will the video be still playing in 3840 x 2160p if I stream (video stored on external HDD and which is connected to my router that supports usb sharing) it via VLC app installed on TV?

Thanks.

Yes as long as the TV specs says it supports the Audio/Video format playback.

Check ur Tv specs supported formats. It may or may not be as smooth as ur PC or streaming device. Try and see.

Tested and it works.
Only problem, now is getting the 5.1 sound from movie while streaming.
On PC, I have 5.1 speaker setup. On tv, I dont think I can connect this PC 5.1 setup.

Ok what 5.1 u hv for PC and what are the connect options. Share i/o details or pic

The multimedia 5.1 chanel with your pc will have an inbuilt amplifier inside the sound card.(DAC kinda device). Since your TV does not have one, see if you have a 3.5 jack in TV which can output stereo 2.0 channel from your multimedia speakers. In this forum, people have had similar issues and have gone for home theater setups buying a cheap amp(avr) and speakers to liven the audio.

TV Does have 3.5 jack output. My 5.1 speaker system creative inspire t6060 (its 16 years old but still works) (https://www.mtwin.ru/api/image/id/4efe3e95-b13f-4cb1-9f48-f05d270c2a4d/768/1024) have three 3.5mm inputs (front, rear and center)
So I can connect the 3.5mm from TV to either Front, Rear or center. So TV sound comes only in either of those.

TV also have an optical audio out, I tried a cheap DAC which does take the optical as input and provide analogue stereo output. Again this output I can connect to either front, rear and center.

The only option seems green aux port. U can connect tv aux out>creative aux in.

Another option could be a multiple ch audio splitter. But it will cost more than creative itself so not a good idea.

U can either connect aux>aux or for even better 2ch u can connect PC optical out>toslink converter>speakers rca to 2 rca

By AUX in TV, did you mean Headphone out? There is no AUX labelled on tv.

To answer your first question, if you stream from an external HDD, it will either play in 4k, or not play at all. There is no way for it to play at a different resolution because there is no streaming server installed. When using VLC, you're basically just playing a file which is located on a network drive. That's all.

For the second question, since you don't have an AVR, you need a device which can convert Optical out to Analog. A 5.1 DAC is not a common device, you won't get any branded products. You will have to look for something like this: https://amzn.eu/d/h5OpS10

But before you buy this, you'll need to ensure that your TV is capable of outputting 5.1 channel audio over optical cable. As surprising as it may sound, my "Dolby certified" TV would only output stereo sound over optical cable. So you can't always be certain. Look for reviews on YouTube or read the spec sheet to find out. There's no sure shot way.

if your player is a PC, you can always direct the audio from the stream to your already connected 5.1 speakers.
Any specific reason why you want to redirect audio via TV?

Yes, I want to avoid keeping pc turned on just to watch tv.
i can setup a NAS using raspberry pi or my router and I can still watch the movie in 4K on tv.
The only reason I currently use PC is, because it can output 5.1 where as tv cannot.

This is exactly I am looking for, but I dont know if my tv optical out outputs 5.1 or not.
I will do some research.

Lest say my tv optical out does outputs 5.1.
How do I connect this DAC to my creative inspire t6060 (https://www.mtwin.ru/api/image/id/4efe3e95-b13f-4cb1-9f48-f05d270c2a4d/768/1024)?
My creative inspire t6060 got only 3.5mm jacks for inputs, Front (green), Rear (black) and Center/Subwoofer (Orange).
Where as the DAC outputs got 6 RCAs
Do i use something like https://www.amazon.in/FEDUS-Speaker...8&hvtargid=pla-944743881519&ext_vrnc=hi&th=1?

I got response from hisense that, "TV optical output 5.1 as well"
I bought optical to 5.1 analog convertor and tested.

It does output sound to all 5 + 1 speakers. However I don't know if its true 5.1 :)
When I play a normal stereo movie, it still plays on all speakers.
Also, sound comes from TV and external speakers. I have to mute TV volume to make sound only from external speakers. That being said, TV volume control has no effect on external speakers, I have to use 5.1 home theatre's volume control (which is bit of pain, as its wired remote control!)
Since the device can take two optical inputs, I can connect my PC as well to it.

Overall, I am happy. It did improve TV's audio overall.

That's good to know. To test it properly, download a test video and try playing it. Just search for dolby surround test tracks and you'll find something. It will play sound from one speaker at a time.

That's an unfortunate consequence of using optical out. Can't be helped.

But glad that it worked out.

Do let us know if you try the test track.

Here is what I did,

Connected the all 5.1 speakers to Optical to Analog 5.1 convertor

Connected 1st Optical output to TV and second one to PC (yes my PC does have optical audio out).

Selected PC Optical as Input by pressing the button on DAC
Played file https://mega.nz/file/ULQSibwY#8z_7PKdzUqfU3xvHfvmfknofqFSXAwjHhN2j2bEZ7Yw and I could hear sound travels from Front Left to
Center to Front Right to Rear Right to Read Left and then on subwoofer, which tells me 5.1 worked correctly on PC.

Then selected TV Optical as Input by pressing button on DAC, played same file. Sound comes from all speakers together. So I guess TV is not outputting 5.1
