Troubleshooting my handycam harrd disk failure

My Sony handycam HDR SR10, started giving HDD access error.

I tried doing a factory reset, hdd format, and even using recovery software but nothing worked.

I went to the Sony service centre and they said the Hard disk has failed, a replacement HDD will cost 11k. Mind you they are saying just by the error code E31:00 not by actually examining it.

One option for me is to use the memory card, which supports upto 8 GB.

The other option would be to open the unit and replace the HDD. Is that really an option?

The cost of the HDD was around 3k shipped from Amazon US that too for the 80GB version.
