Most of you will agree with me Turntable repairing is not for all electronics mechanics. Specially those complicated Garrard Changers and the like cannot be repaired by any mechanic and unfortunately those who used to specialize in them are not to be found these days. I have been fortunate to have a TT mechanic who is in his 40's but had been fascinated by these kind of players from a very young age and I am trying to dedicate his service entirely to to the service of Turntables. I know he has the potential to dismantle and put back even the most complicated TTs as well as the modern ones of the 80's . Except the fully electronic players like those Sansui linear tracks with electronic problems, he can service competently most Turntables including servicing of the tonearm assembly and the motor. He has a fantastic mechanical mind and has taken my Garrrard 301 completely apart and reassembled it with ease. So if any of the Forum members want to use his service, you can contact me as he is doing some other work also and I would like to engage him exclusively for this work in future as Vinyl is coming back in a big way and we need guys like him

This seems a very good idea. This will surely be useful. It is very good to have a trustworthy person who can repair turntables.

only we need to consider the shipping part.

Regards

It's great to have such people available these days. I'd definitely contact you if need any such service. By the way, does your friend know other people that specialize in this (since he is a specialist, he might be knowing a few others too)?

Also, would he be ready to conduct some sort of demo/workshop that we all could go and attend? You know, turntable maintenance, repair, etc. Some general tips. For people interested i.e.

Regards,
Saket.

Yes, shipping to his home is the problem. He is an expert at packing. RAAGA will vouch for that as the TT sent to him was packed by this gentleman

Unfortunately, due to aged parents and other responsibilities, he is unable to move to other places and that is why I want to utilize his service . He is also doing some other business which takes up his time but if he can be engaged for servicing for say 20 to 25 days a month, he would concentrate only on this work.

Kuruvila sir, I remember how you offered me to send my TT for the restoration to this gentleman. I would have definitely sent it to you had it not been that far. But kudos to the gentleman and of course, to you too, who shared this with the forum. And I am sure that we would all benefit at some point of the time or another from it.

Thanks,
Saket

PS: I see that peace_sells is also 'Saket':D

Haha! i remember when i met Mr. Kuruvila for the first time (I'd told him that my name is Saket)..he was expecting to meet you :D

That sounds interesting. Got anything to share from the meeting?
Though, I would love to see Mr. Kuruvila's collection some day...also want to show it to my wife who terms me as a spendthrift even with a modest set up and a relatively small collection of records!

Hello sir,
Very nice to hear the news that some one is really servicing vintage TTs with care n enthusiasm. Here also i know 2 people ( very few are left) who have the talent to do any kind of TT and valve amps servicing. But unfortunately in place like Bombay with its high cost of living their interest in this time consuming & attention demanding job is dwindling. They are more interested in the fast bucks that come with easy & non complicated jobs.

I have developed a good relation based on mutual respect, so i could get some servicing done from them.My Philips valve amp AG 9015 is an example.
But this will go on till when?
So we should encourage people like your TT mech.:clapping:

There are some chaps who are good but are not motivated and not only demand very high service charge, they also make you wait for months to do such work. Then there are some who pretend to know how to repair these valuable vintage stuff but ruin them. I have got several such players which were destroyed by guys who have no idea what they are doing.

You are Absolutely right sir!

Shafic, I had the same model in mint condition and I regret giving it away. It used to look majestic and sounded good too. The SL-1200 was based on this model. I sill have the original SL-1200 wih the same type of arm of 1100. Your SL-1100 really needs a full servicing. It will have to be fully dismantled and repainted. Even the caps and transistors will need to be replaced . Do not use it before full servicing as the bearing may need lubrication

I just got a Technics Sl 1100 a TT today, working fine:yahoo: but ....

OMG!! The 1100 is a master piece. I don't miind facing the death penalty for mercilessly slaughtering the guy to got this TT to such a state. Looks like it was lying in a heap of junk in some dark and damp room.

Shafic,

Good find. Once restored the before and after pictures will be like night and day...all strength to you....

Right on the dot sir, as you always are!!

Shafic - Thats a fine vintage DD TT you go there. Pity its condition.

What plans for a complete overhaul?

As per Mr Kuruvilla's advice, first i am going to get it serviced fully. Mr Sachu's suggestion of a wooden plinth is also in my mind. I intend to give it a complete makeover step by step. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
