Man!!! I am already paying about 600 a month without channels like Star World Premier...and the 2 new HBO channels...Soon it'll be 1k a month...Just WOW

Why just Tata Sky ? All other DTH are into milking the people. Even after buying the 'HD Royal' pack - the costliest, I dont get these Channels on my DishTV.
It is time Pay-Per-View is implemented with Fiber-to-The-Door TV, the next Gen IPTV, whose predecessor Airtel launched sometime back half hardheartedly.

Even the much praised picture quality of TataSky HD is sub-par to HD services in US. And we are not paying too less either. There was a time when TV was free in the form of Doordarshan (after its licences free regime what I saw all my childhood).
Today we pay for these channels, and we also see more Ads than actual content. And late nights, many channels become 'Telebrands' and sham like Govinda selling Snake Oil. BS.

I am not sure if these channels are already available on other DTH platforms :they claim that this is an Ad free channels -but does that mean also no cross advertising/ defacing the screen with ugly ads promoting another program/serial ? I feel that this practice of charging approx Rs 50 a month per HD channel will be the way DTH providers will go.

what other options do we have??? does airtel dth provies these channels as a pack????
Airtel dth has the channels but there too you'll have to get them separately.

As far as choice is concerned, there is one. Netflix! Huge library of 100% Ad free, On demand, uncensored quality content for a very reasonable fee. You'll end up paying quite a bit for a speedier internet connection (if you don't have one already) with a bigger FUP, DNS server and netflix itself but if you can justify the costs, there's no better option. Other than maybe going the torrent route which is not just illegal but a huge PITA too nowhere near a better option IMO.

I always expected that these two channels would be added as specials. The charges as stated are Rs. 90 pm per channel, or Rs. 99 for both (combo) or Rs. 990 annually for both (combo).

The good thing is that they are showing ad-free movies, programs which "kind-of" justifies the premium status. Bad thing is the cost which is fairly expensive. For me, the two channels do not bring much excitement because:

1) I have most of the movies in my library
2) The movies will be censored for content
3) I am not sure about superimposed ad's and banners

Airtel is extremely reluctant, for reasons best known to them, of increasing their speeds on the 1.5m copper lines, from 2mbps to 30-40 mbps it is capable of. It takes quite a bit of persuasion to get them to upgrade speeds on existing lines. so I doubt if they will roll out new copper lines, or fibre.

Netflix is not an option for me. I do not have options other than BSNL for wireline broadband. The others such as Reliance, Tata, etc. are available on WiMax which do not gurantee speeds (even BSNL does not but at least it is OK). Netflix is sure to trap the location and deny service. But, even if I somehow manage to "fool" NF by changing DNS and engaging a proxy, the current BB plan would not work.

Currently I am on ULD 800 plan (1 mbps till 6 GB, 512 kbps thereafter). The minimum high speed plan as will be required by NF will be 4 mpbs in my opinion (correct me if I am wrong) for HD quality, although 8 mbps will be desirable. The next best plan is ULD 950 which gives 4 mbps till 8 GB (512 kbps later). In my opinion 8GB will be consumed very fast - like in 2-3 days when streaming 2 hours daily (@3600 MB per 2 hour movie). And this is not taking into account normal internet usage.

For 3-4 days of joy, I will have to spend more to the amount of Rs. 150/- plus service tax.

It will be much cheaper to buy the BDs instead. Anyway, strictly my opinion.

+ 1

Same situation here.. I am on the BB1425 package and even though they say I will get 4MBPS until 20 GB.. When I download using torrents.. I get a maximum of 450KBPS... and once that quota is exceeded it falls to one tenth of that allowed speed... BSNL really sucks !!! Beyond that speed/quota NF will be like Youtube on 128KBPS... stream for the maximum amount of time and play for 2 seconds.. :)

Yes, it can be a little costly in the end but you get what you pay for. If you ever get a chance at 4+ Mbps broadband connection with 100+ gb FUP, do try it out though.

For me, it was a no brainer. I already had a decent 8 Mbps connection both at home and office didn't need to upgrade for netflix. As far as "somehow" managing to fool netflix about your location is concerned, it's really really easy. It'll take barely 2 minutes to set up your DNS and cost about 200 bucks a month. Fortunately you can also find some free servers too. I've been using a free one only since I started netflix so not even paying that cost.

So the only charges I'm paying is netflix itself. And between the four of us, it comes upto ? 185 appx per month. That's probably less than half what you'll pay for a BD. Certainly worth it for me. The picture and audio quality is even better than your average DTH HD channels (though certainly falls short of actual Blu rays). And the content is uncensored.

If I didn't have netflix as an option, I'd have probably jumped at the hbo HD channels. Ad free content for a reasonable fee (yearly cost is less than 2 blu rays) which I can record and watch at my leisure. What more could I ask for? Except maybe a little more leniency in audio censorship. But as long as I have netflix, it's pretty much a waste as I already have a lifetime worth of content available on demand.

Has anyone seen the 3D showcase movies? Any opinions on the PQ and 3D quality?

I saw 3d movies on TataSky and found them fairly good. However very disappointed to know about new HBO channels.
For Star World Premier channel I had to talk to their CR for about 30 minutes and then asked to get connected to Senior who activated it instantly when the channel was added.

Not sure whether I will need to do that again and remind them that Annual Mega package was sold to us only at the promise of all new channels added automatically.

true :( they shouted the loudest voice, whatever new channel come it will be included in mega pack blah blah

feels like cheated now.

as of now HBO is not censoring mild words like, shit, etc. ( also in subtitle its written as crap - instead of shit) - based on my experience watching Looper yesterday.
Indian censorship system is bloddy retarded, they air softporn all the times, say it in Latin angel and similar in TLC, brainless Indian movie songs with no scene of dressing and vulgar-indecent poses.
But all great movies will be full of beeps & mutes. Kill-Bill in HBO was a pure joke almost 25% scenes were missing.
