Continuing with Rachmanivov his lesser recorded/played piano concerto No1 by none other than the awesome Lugansky is A1 to say the least. Over the years I have grown to love this piano concerto more than his next 3, not counting the variations. The other artists who play it as well are Yuja Wang and Anna Fedorova. Top notch stuff. What I love about Yuja Wang is she has brought in the Tchaikovsky piano concerto No2 into her repertoire which again is not played/recorded very often and to my mind is a phenomenal concerto.

If Rach is your poison look no further than Lugansky, Volodos, Yuja Wang, Anna Fedorova. Ofcourse this list is very debatable and names like Horowitz, Janis, Gilels, Argerich, etc will be thrown into the argument.

I simply adore the Tchaikovsky piano concerto 2 as well. The complete version that is not the cut Ziloti version. There is a tremendous live uncut performance of the work by Alexandre Kantorow which led to winning the first prize at the 2019 Tchaikovsky International Competition. Lots of his versions are available on Youtube.

The Brahms specialist with a fantastic orchestra.

Hmmm...I never warmed to Chailly's Brahms...I remember his Concertgebouw cycle which seemed a little soulless. But memory is a fallible thing. Let me listen to this cycle again.

Hmmm...I never warmed to Chailly's Brahms...I remember his Concertgebouw cycle which seemed a little soulless. But memory is a fallible thing. Let me listen to this cycle again.

I didn't either initially. After listening 3-4 times did I begin to appreciate. I was quite jaded by Blomstedt Brahms with Statskapelle Dresden and Gewandhaus and the Mehta recordings.

Listening to Christoph Poppen Tchaikovsky “Pathetique” live recording with the Deutche Radio Philharmonie. Nice.

In my quest to rediscover Rachmaninov…..and fine recording at that. It has Eugene Ormandy one of the finest accompanist…. And Philippe Entremont on the Piano

Mahler 8th Mariss Jansons and Royal Concertgebouw Live performance.

Wonderful. Many of the greatest are not able to hold this piece together but here every part of the huge ensemble is in sync across the length of the composition.

Love it.
