Hello..I need to Wirelessly stream Mp3 from my Android (Nexus 5) to play through my Yamaha AV receiver.

I have the following stuff :

Yamaha RX-V475
Pioneer BDP-160 (supports Wifi Direct)
Nexus 5

I don't want to use Bluetooth as the quality goes down using Bluetooth. I want to stream music like how you do using Airplay and iOS devices. How do I achieve this?

your pioneer BDP can be used for the same.. search for your device on the local device menu in BDP else use wifi-direct/etc on your android to get the device detected..

however as you stated mp3.. what way do you claim.. quality goes down..
even bluetooth 2.0 gives a very happy throughput to play any mp3 without quality downgrade..The nominal rate of EDR is about 3 Mbit/s, although the practical data transfer rate is 2.1 Mbit/s...

unless you want to decode flac/wav on your mobile and then stream it to your device wifi wont be needed... also wifi has its own ups and downs... it has flaws too..

I agree with ironhorse. Just to add, you can first install a DLNA streamer app on your android like BubbleUPnP and then enable your wifi tethering option in order for the BDP to connect to that. After connection completes, if your BDP is recognized by bubbleUPnP then you can control the rest from your phone. If not, then you have to search the bubbleUPnP server from BDP menu (DLNA servers) and then connect and play through the BDP controls.

Thanks for all the help..I tried Streambels app and it streamed my music but the Pioneer Blu Ray player kept getting stuck playing only one song although I tried playing many other songs..Would need to update the Pioneer's firmware.

Will try BubbleuPnp and see how it performs..

By the way, I was not happy with the bluetooth quality that I had heard. But it was without AptX codec. With aptx codec, it might be close to Mp3. Also I don't want to spend more money now just to get a bluetooth adapter. I want to use the Wifi and DLNA functionality that is available on my Blu Ray Player and Cell Phone.

Its not just music, I would like to stream even Videos from my Android phone. Does the BubbleUPnp does that too?

setup the DLNA environment, you can stream Audio/video/image.

provided server and player both should support.
anyway BT is better option for audio. BT dongles are not that costly

check for SONY MW600 - You can use it in many way, it has built in FM as well.

SONY MW600 is BT earphone and not a dongle. The OP wants to stream music to his AVR.

@jain1980: A few tips from my personal experience. I am using Belkin HD BT receiver with my Denon AVR. My requirement was exactly same as yours.
Go for bluetooth, if you must, only if the dongle and your Android device both support AptX. Also, the SQ of the inbuilt DAC of the dongle will be suspect, hence find a dongle that has optical/digital audio out so that you can use the onboard DAC of your AVR.

"SONY MW600 is BT earphone and not a dongle. The OP wants to stream music to his AVR."

remove the 3.5mm headphone, attach 3.5mm (male) both sides - you have BT streming setup ready
else buy any BT dongle (many options available - aptx supported would be costly)

find a dongle that has optical/digital audio out so that you can use the onboard DAC of your AVR.
this would be the solution you want, because DAC will make a difference in sound quality as you were not comfortable in BT audio quality.

Try installing Skifta on your Android device and stream your music to Pioneer BDP.

Have you thought of getting a chromecast ?
Chromecast provides lot of options for streaming local/online content.
I am using it and I love it.

It is available at amazon.in Google Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player: Amazon.in: Electronics

Thanks for the suggestion. :signthankspin:

Does the chromecast allows streaming of my local music and videos stored on my smartphone?

Also as an afterthought, does the chromecast even support screen mirroring so that I can view my Nexus 5 screen on my LED TV? I think this option would be great to play games directly on my TV with 5.1 sound through my AVR.

If you have connected Yamaha AVR with Ethernet cable, you can download the Yamaha Application from google playstore & play your MP3 right from your mobile thru wi-fi.... Have you tried this ?

Yes. You need to use android apps for that. There are many in Playstore but Allcast and Localcast are the best.

Allcast https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.cast
Localcast https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.stefanpledl.localcast

I prefer Localcast. Beyond streaming (casting) local content on your phone, you can cast content from your network drives too. I have my 1TB disk connected to asus router. I can browse it's contents using Localcast (or any other fileexplorer) and then cast media content to Chromecast.

However, chromecast media support is bit limited. H264 video + AAC/MP3/Vorbis audio. See here for details https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/media

Yes if your phone is rooted. See this post by Allcast developer who is working on mirroring functionality on chromecast https://plus.google.com/u/0/110558071969009568835/posts/iWcpAhBha5F

With chromecast, you can also cast content from your laptop to TV over via Chrome browser without any wired connection between laptop and TV. \
Basically with chromecast, possibilities are endless :)

Thanks jarivk. I am considering getting a chromecast to stream local content in my laptop to a Yamaha RX v475 receiver. As of now, I am not interested in streaming video as I still have an ancient 21' CRT! Which brings me to my question - I had heard that Chromecast was limited to casting youtube in India. Does it now allow casting of local content? If so, can it be used as an audio only conduit to play songs stored in my laptop (mostly MP3s) on my hi fi speakers attached to the AVR?

Thanks
Harsha

Chromecast is limited and supported for very few apps.you cant mirror your whole phone via chromecast go for a miracast which can mirror your phone as well as anything video or audio

I am not interested in streaming from my phone as there is a Yamaha android app that kind of covers this. i am more interested in wireless streaming of local content (primarily audio and video) from my laptop to the av receiver. I know there is a bluetooth adapter available but this degrades the signal quality and the BT in my laptop isnt all that great.

Thanks
Harsha

A short answer to your question is YES.
Long answer follows...

As of now chrome browser is the only way for casting local content from PC to chromecast. There 2 ways for casting content.
1. Cast a chrome browser tab. Here, all contents in your chrome tab including audio, video and photos gets casted and shows on TV. Say you are watching your flickr photos on laptop and want to show it on TV, then you just cast the chrome tab and watch it TV. You need to install this extension for casting a tab https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd?hl=en

2. Use chrome browser extensions. These extensions allow you to play local AV content within chrome tab and cast it to chromecast. One such extension is Videostream https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...gle-ch/cnciopoikihiagdjbjpnocolokfelagl?hl=en .

Option 2 is the one you are looking for. With this you can cast local audio files. But since this extension was mainly for casting videos, it doesn't have features such as song playlist, album art display etc.

If you are interested in streaming audio only content, I would recommend using Google Play Music service. I have been using it for past couple of years and it is just awesome, being able to listen to your audio collection from anywhere. Its free of cost and allows free cloud storage of 20k songs. These songs can then be played from any android device (or with casting option) or chrome browser from PC (for local playback or with casting option).

I was doing some research and came across the Plex app for android and windows. I believe this will allow casting of local content to chromecast. Has anyone tried this? This was a paid app that is now free. Link below:

Have seen that but it needs a dedicated PC to run Plex media server which is a pain. Also, only the Plex server on PC is free. Plex app on android or iphone is still paid at price of Rs.300.

As I thought more about casting content on PC, there is one more option.
The Android LocalCast app I mentioned in previous post supports browsing shared folders over network. So assuming you have your PC and mobile on same network, you can share folders from PC, browse them from mobile using LocalCast and then cast the A/V content to chromecast.

Dedicated PC as in? Would I not be able to install the Plex media server in my laptop and cast content stored in my laptop (say MP3s) to a chromecast dongle attached to a HDMI port in my av receiver?
