Hi

My old hifi just died on me, had it brought with me from abroad so no one can repair it. What are my options for a audiophile quality decent cd player (with r without dvd function) with 2.0 or 2.1 speaker system and priced under 15k???

thanks in advance

Hi,

Is the budget only for the CD/DVD player or CDP+speaker system?

If it is for both, then Philips and Sony have some options. I use Philips micro 177which has DVD player with progressive scan, 20w/channel built in amplifier and stereo speakers, Then there is micro 178 also which is a nice 2.1 system. However I doubt wheter they can be/will be classified as audiophile.

If the budget is for the CDP/DVDp only, then Cambridge audio DV 89 or 99 or entry level Maranz CDP (Cd 5003) will be in your budget.

Hi Jaudere

Thank you for your response. The philips micro 177 is not available anymore, I think its been phased out and the two similar systems in the store could not beat even my tiny sony computer speakers (brought from abroad) in sound quality and loudness.

Any other options? And no I don't want to invest that much on only a player. Maybe on speakers though...

Thanks again

Another option could be

Audio engine A2 as active speakers(Speakers+amplifier): Rs 10k.
Pioneer DVDp , Can't remember exact model but I think it is DVP220 Rs 4.5k.

Use the search engine of this forum/google to read more about these products. They are considered one of the best VFM products in the price range.

Read this review by Venkat, a very senior member of forum who is a moderator now.

Hi jaudere

Thanks a zillion! Great choices! I'd just use my present dvd player or look for cheaper options on it... but the speaker reviews and tests on youtube sound great!

Anything else you can think of? Perhaps with a remote?

Thanks, am seriously considering this option!

Regards

Hi again jaudere

This may sound stupid but I don't know anything about specs in these matters- just have sensitive ears.....
Could it be possible to find a dvd/cd player that can accept my current speakers (from the dead hifi) that are 4ohm impedence? Can i plug it into a home theater dvd player that outputs 4ohm front speakers? Okay, don't laugh...... is that possible? why not and what other specs should match up?

Regards and thanks for all your help!

hi,
What do you exactly mean by dvd player home theatre?

There are some dvdps by Lg with built in amp. I but it is nowhere near audiophile grade. I dont think they can satisfy you.
One option:there is an indian company called DNM Audio in mumbai. They have something called 'high end Cd player that has built in amp of 20w RMS'. I liked the sound. You can audition yourself at their manufacturing unit which is there in Andheri. Check their website also. Very good specs. Cost 15k. Important points to note:
You have volume adjustment in the same remote of the CD Player
1)the cost does not include speakers.

2)the player plays audio cd only. Not even mp3. But you can connect your present dvdp to it for playing mp3.

3)Poor resale value as the brand is not well regarded as such.

If you plan to connect your speakers to present dvdp directly, it will hardly give any audible sound.

If you connect your speakers to fronts of a home theatre with built in dvdp,it may not give full sound . The home theatre usually splits sound into 5+1 for sub. Low frequencies are fed to sub only. So front speakers dont get full audio spectrum.

If you have working Dvdp, another excellent option is Norge 2030 or 4242 stereo amp(cost around 5k &7k resp). Try these with your sony speakers and dvd player at their unit at Mahim. If you like sound, you save money. If not , try Norge Millenium book shelf speakers at the same place. Good product. Good synergy between norge amp and speakers is well known. The speakers will cost about 10k. So total cost will be 15 to 17k.
If your dvd player is sony/philips/Samsung, dont go for pioneer that i recommended. You wont notice big difference. Your present dvd p will serve you well. Instead put all your money in amp+ speakers.

I am using speakers of a brand called Ventronic.made in mumbai. Excellent sound. Cost 9k. But i bought it in Goa. I dont know where you will get it in Mumbai. I use marantz pm 6002.45w/ch.

I dont use cd/dvdp. I use my netbook as audio source with creative sound card. Ripped all my cds into wav format.

If you already have a PC,Dont look at cdp/dvdp at this point of time. Just put a good sound card in your pc and use it.

Most of the philips dvd players have volume control on remote controller. Price starts from 3k. If you are looking just for simple audio, get the cheapest dvdp by philips. Will serve you well.

If you are open to used gear, keep on looking in 'sale by owner' section of the forum. Good deals keep on coming frequently.
