After living with my DIY three way monsters (13 * 16 * 48) and DIY TQWT (9.5 * 14 * 48) due to ever demanding issue of real estate I have been asked to sacrifice these biggies and settle with smaller ones.

This prompted me to think about Full range based setup and after seeing lot of successful projects completed. I am thinking of using a Full Ranger wide band 6 or 6.5 Drivers and use the existing Dayton 7 Aluminium cone woofer has down firing.

I am looking for suggestions for following

  1. Which Full range wide band I can be picked which can be crossed to Dayton Woofer around 120Hz
  2. Type of enclosures for both the compartments

The other stuffs in the chain will remain same and some will be upgraded.

  • Source TT, Pioneer (BDP 180), Tape (Nakamichi deck 2)
  • Pre amp Cambridge audio C-500 (Will be replaced by a tube pre YAQIN?)
  • Active Crossovers Yet to purchase one, short listed Behringer DEQ 9460, miniDSP also looking for suggestion
  • Power Amp 2 * Quad 306

Type of music I listen these days are more of Jazz, Blues, Western Classical, Indian classical and instruments along with Hindi & other regional language film songs etc.

Any suggestions/advice will be really helpful for me to complete the project.

Check out on the Fostex FR driver over the Dayton Audio FR driver for the simple reason that the former is Ferrite magnet and later is Neodymium magnet. It will be difficult to tame the highs in the latter without heavy compensation networks which could be tricky unless you have scope for measurements.

My 2 paise.

Thanks Hari its a very useful suggestion. I am inclined more towards fostex/alpair. Once the drivers are fixed I will try too buy a decent measurement devices.

Hi Hari,

Why will the magnet type have an impact on the highs?

Thanks Keith, Smaller drivers are with more treble this is what I heared with my Sven 3" FR driver so thought some bigger driver.

This is an excellent choice, but needs a crossover at 300hz, as rising distortion below that could reduce the benefits. Also, strictly, a tweeter is useful.

My 2c worth, if you have the cash, is the Dayton ps180. Very efficient, and amazingly low distortion all the way down to about 200hz. Like all full rangers, will require a bit of filter work to get the sound to your liking.

Thanks kapvin, the price seems to be on higher side, so if I go with that then I can easily cross them as low as 200hz and will I need a tweeter if so from what frequency I should cut off to tweeter?

Also the Dayton woofer DA175-8 is around 85db I need to bring others too around same level.

I got very good results with PS180 as well as PS220.

I have its measurements as well some where, not able to locate it easily on my PC. Will share that soon.

Thanks,
Bibin

Can you please share it when time permits also I about the fountek 5" FR?

Hello Bibin, Your speaker system looks very nice, indeed. Do you have the plans for them? Could you share these with us, please?

Thanks, HP.

Hi jmascreen, Are you referring to the TQWT by Troels Gravesens? I was planning to build those a couple of years ago, but Gravesens mentioned that the design wouldn't work without those custom-made 98dB+ efficiency drivers. Which drivers did you use in yours? Thanks, HP.

No it's not a design from Troels, I picked this one from parts express forum. The drivers are Dayton da175-8 woofer and dc28-8 tweeter.

The above mentioned chain has been changed to a DCB1+F5. Now suggestions required for a good speakers to go along with it. I heard this with XLS speakers and they sounded fantastic however getting them is a big question
