Hi Guys,

Good news! Apple has launched it's famed Apple TV in India for Rs8295.

What do you guys think about the price & is it a threat to other media players?

What content will it show? Rs. 8295 is the cost for what? Annual subscription? CPE? What would be the bandwidth requirements? Can it be an alternative to DTH?

Would love to hear more details.

It's a media streaming device (capable of 1080p). It is not an alternate to DTH as it doesn not air channels as yet. There is no annual subsricption.

It can play content bought/rented from their store.

It also streams content over WIFI from PC to apple tv which can be connected to HDTV via HDMI.

It also streams content from you tube, netfix etc.

Also, if you own an ipad/iphone it can stream using a feature known as Airplay!

More details can be found here in this link: Apple (India) - Apple TV - Now theres always something good on TV.

Indeed, Airplay Mirroring and The Remote addition is a great feature, the last I checked, it was Rs.7999, what happened to that price?

Apple TV is a media player which has a HDMI connection to your TV. It can run content from itunes running on your laptop/ipad/iphone... using airplay. Does a decent job of streaming video and audio with good ui. Cons are usage of itunes and its accompanying issues. Since, itunes now has an India store, one can buy/rent movies/songs and play it via your HT/audio system.

Not the Apple TV3 (atleast not yet)

I have an Apple TV3 which I am not using since I have two bluray player with Networks. If any one interested to buy, feel free to PM me!

Very overpriced unfortunately.. my Denon supports Airplay for audio.. not video which Apple TV would support. Format support as a media player very limited. Content on iTunes store to stream is limited at the moment.. best to wait a few months, IMO.

I do not like Apple products in India. iTunes is too restrictive and offers limited choices. I have iPod and that's that.

Apple products are always priced like that worldwide & still they find takers for it so I am sure they are doing lot many things right with their products.

They are opening up & taking India seriously now, Itunes has started billing in INR and lot of Indian content as well. Options to buy/rent movies in both HD & SD.

This is really good news. However I think the price is too high. I got mine from the states for $99 bucks.

I make complete use of the Apple TV3. I know workarounds to play different formats including .mkv files, this is without jailbreaking the device. So iTunes limitaion does not matter to me. I have this connected to my home theater as well.

Fantastic product, but you need to be a bit tech savvy to get around.

The AppleTV absolutely rocks. After getting one all my problems with media streaming just disappeared. I have it connected to my bedroom setup and its a gem of a device. Streams movies and music right off my PC. I use it a lot for watching Youtubes on my bedroom TV.

The INR price is a little high for sure. I picked up mine in the US for $100. Was surprised to see that it was priced at $140 in Abu Dhabi duty free on my way back. Probably the same pricing being used here. Whatever the price - the fact is that if you have an iPhone or iPad this device completely transforms your media streaming. Audio purists may frown on the Toslink connection for audio but I am quite happy with the sound I am getting on my setup. You also can't play flacs but most anything else plays just fine.

Highly recommended purchase if you have an iPhone/iPad. Lots of fun.

I've been using an Apple TV from past 2-3 years now. The only possible feature that I use it for is Airplay mirroring from my iPad when I want to show some pictures or maybe even some videos to my folks. Rest I have a MBP 13" Mid 2010 as well as Mid 2009 iMac 21.5" as well which can't use these features because according to Apple, this tech is very old!! I guess only their 2011 onwards models support this feature. For netflix, it's practically unusable. For youtube, I have my phone or my ipad. So, my iPad uses airplay mirroring thru apple tv which is much more easier because typing on that slim little remote, ah, not my cup of tea. iTunes store in India recently launched but the problem is, I rather download my purchased movies from iTunes store on my ipad and airplay mirror it to my apple tv rather than online streaming on the apple tv itself. This is due to the maximum speed available here in punjab i.e. 2MBPS and you can't view HD content effortlessly (with less buffering) without increasing your bandwidth connection. Can't say about those who have 4 or 8 MBPS lines.

My 2 cents.:)

Pls correct me if I am wrong..

So, I can use Apple TV only to stream from itunes store in India or my idevices to the Tele via HDMI or over WiFi... It doesnt act like a WiFi base in case I connect my DSL or Cable internet to it?

For that I have to get the Airport Express.. right??

Is it worth getting the Airport Express to go with the AVR setup???

Apple TV has only one HDMI connection which can be connected to your AVR like I have done. True, the price here is exorbitant. Better to get it from the US @ $99/-. No issues about voltage as it works on 230-240 V A/C.

If Airplay is the only feature people are interested to purchase Apple TV, there are alternatives ....... google Miracast and Intel WiDi.

How does that help iPad and iPhone users? Apple TV is a neat little gem worthy of your money IF you use apple products. The alternatives you mentioned wont work with iPhone or ipad. Maybe with macs though not sure about that.

There is a big IF there, anyway my point was if you do not have apple products, but still want an Airplay kind of feature .....

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
