Avoid Placing Speakers at Even Divisions of the Room

Placing speakers at “even” divisions of the room (like halfway or one-quarter of the total dimension) often creates strong resonances that exaggerate or cancel certain frequencies.

Even divisions (like ½, ¼, ⅛ of room length/width) tend to align perfectly with room modes. This symmetry makes peaks and nulls more extreme, smearing clarity and bass articulation.
  • Avoid placing speakers exactly at ½ or ¼ of the room’s depth or width.
  • Instead, use uneven ratios that don’t coincide with strong room modes. A popular starting point is 1/3 or 1/5.
  • From there, fine-tune by listening for bass balance and imaging stability. Small moves (even a few centimeters) can smoothen response dramatically.
Get the fundamentals right today. Next week, we go deeper.
