Witch tweeter is better?
Aurum Cantus AST30130 Aero Striction Tweeter 276-444
Aurum Cantus G1 Ribbon Tweeter 276-420
I see that Aurum Cantus AST30130 Aero Striction Tweeter is more expensive, and has better low end extension, but its not made of ribbon? That's what confuses me..

this is what i found
"However, after many decades (and countless product failures), we have learned that conventional long flat ribbons are to be avoided (even if they look impressive).
Instead use many tiny collocated ribbons, working in unison. Some describe them as sandwich, bellows, folded or accordion ribbons."
So, if i understand correctly, Aero Striction Tweeter is superior to normal ribbon tweeter?

Don't worry about that, i have my people for home building speakers, they are very good at that, they have like 40 years of experience, but i need to know which tweeter is better, i cant ask them now because they are not in the country right now, and i have to order very soon..? Thanks in advance

I dont think you will find help here from someone who has used/heard these in a design (I hope I am not jumping the gun here). These are 400$ each, so better make sure you take the correct call. you might want to check out PE techtalk forums and diy audio forums for these.

The first line got me confused. I thought now it has become a witchcraft to make a tweeter :)
By the way what is bg in the OP's location? Bangalore/belgaun/Belgium?

Sorry for offtopic but i bet Mrs. Pis is a CEO of some big organization. I have heard those guys talk in very cryptic yet short sentences.

doors666 can you please link me to PE techtalk forums? thnks

Belgrade, Serbia. Here, one of the best amps in the world are built (Beyond Frontiers Audio Tulip). Also we have very fameous speakers maker Karan Acoustics.

"My ultimate judgment of a high-end component is its ability to reproduce musical content without having to strain to listen to it. The more you have to lean forward, squint your eyes or mentally focus on any aspect of the music to hear it clearly, the further away from the ultimate you get. In fact, the ultimate musical experience is not listening to the system at all, but having the system immerse you in the music in all its detail and emotion with no effort on your part at all. Does that make sense?
With that standard, the BFA Tulip is most decidedly an ultra high-end amplifier, integrated or not. "
Cheers

Folded ribbons (Heil & Adam's Air Motion Transformers, Raal, Aurum Cantus) effectively push 4 times the amount of air through the tweeter than a convention long ribbon (Magnepan, Carver, etc.). That's why they're supposed to be good, plus they don't display beaming like other ribbons (they're a point source, not a line source). Hope this helps:)

I like that the AST tweeter has crossing as low as 1.000hz, that's what i like the most about it! But i don't really know the difference between the classical ribbon tweeters (G1) and AST tweeters (AST30130)?

I also see that Aurum Cantus uses the AST in their best and most expensive speakers (NEW GRAND SUPREME, original GRAND SUPREME uses G1) so i assume that it is their top of the line tweeter?

I see by the picture comparison that AST is much wider than g1, so i assume that's why it has a much lower Recommended minimum crossover frequency: 1,000 Hz, in comparison to g1 which has Recommended minimum crossover frequency: 2,000 Hz, and that's what i really like about AST over the G1, it can be used as a partial midrange, with the right crossover.

AST http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/792/newgrandsupreme2530.jpg
G1 http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/7055/supremeo.jpg

What i don't understand is how NEW GRAND SUPREME can have Frequency Response 25Hz-40kHz when AST goes only to 22khz? That's whats bugging me over the G1, the G1 has freq response that goes as high as 40khz, so it can be used even as a super tweeter.

cheers

I have Raven R1 ribbon tweeters in an MTM stand mounted monitor, the AriaR, designed by Joe D'Appollito. These ribbons are generally considered the best ribbons that money can buy. What specifically do you want to know about ribbons?

What is the main difference between classical ribbons and AST tweeters? Besides that AST tweeter can go much lower and not so high as ribbon?
What is the price of Raven R1 ribbon tweeters? Do you have some link with specs and where to buy them online? Are they within the G1 price range (500$)?

Thanks for that info, but does that mean that Folded ribbons(AST) are better then convention long ribbon (G1)? What are the ups and downs of both tweeters? Ok, i get it AST can push more air = go lower than G1, that's a plus, and that's what i like the most about it. But are there any downs to this tweeter in comparison to G1?

Hi! So sorry, have been travelling for the past week and have not been online. Well, I don't have measurements per se, but I do own a traditional ribbon (Magnepan) and a folded one (ADAM A5). The primary advantage I see is one of efficiency, and ease of driving. The Maggies are 83 dB efficient, the ADAMs are 86, also 4 ohm vs 8 ohm (basically less energy being required to push the same air). The ease of integration is also a factor- difficult to integrate a line source with a point source in the same enclosure..hence either the suboptimal solution of Magnepan having barn door sized speakers, or Carver with seperate subwoofer modules having their own integration issues. Hope this helps.

I see that New Grand Supreme has a rear firing tweeter? Why? I don't understand its purpose..

Many conventional speakers have a rear tweeters. It gives the speaker a bit more "air".

Exactly. Folded ribbons are (a) easier to drive as they are more senstive and (b) Folded ribbons are less fragile than simple ribbons as much of the damage ribbons face is due to foil damage from being pushed too hard.

and that's what i really like about AST over the G1, it can be used as a partial midrange, with the right crossover.

Crossing over in the critical (the ear is most sensitive here) midrange band is something that should be avoided. That said there are many good designs with their XO in the 500-2kHz band.

40kHz? I know there are some that say while we cant hear that high such tweeters have a different feel to them but really 40kHz? That's a full octave above what we normally consider very good hearing.

Use the AST by all means, just XO it at 2khz+. Unlike a simple ribbon that would demand a 4th order XO at 2kHz the AST can make do wtih a simpler XO and that means few components in the signal path. Therein lies the benefit in my opinion.
