AVR keep shutting down

Hi,

My Denon avr 1713 keep shutting down from last 2 days, even yesterday for a while its unable to the standby mode too, after half n hour again its working fine i have already done the first aid required as speaker wires are still ok, all the connectors are also in good condition, is it because of current fluctuation or due to the rack i am using wherein all four sides are open except top of the cabinet which is as close too avr as half inch.


Please suggest do i need to add stabilizer or UPS will work for me as i think its a electricity problem, i am having 3 step stabilizer which is used with AC can i attach that one to my AVR and my projector simultaneously.

This can happen due to many reasons -

The speaker wires are shorting (touching each other) somewhere down the line.
The voltage is very low.
Power fluctuations
High temperature especially if you are driving the speakers at high volumes
Very low impedence of the speakers.
AVR issues (it may have to be serviced).

If your wires are fine, equipment rack is well ventilated and still the AVR goes to standby after half an hour of use then it's unlikely that it is due to power supply. In case of power supply problems it should not require half an hour of rest before being able to work normally. Most probably the AVR is heating up and you should check the wires once again.

How does a Denon ventilate? My Onkyo has a fan blowing air through the top of the rec. If the Denon is the same then half inch is too little clearance for effective cooling

Denon has got heatsink in front so it's advisable to have atleast 6 inch gap on top.

It's clear that your unit is not getting proper ventilation hence your receiver won't turning on.

What is the volume level you generally operate your avr?

Place the AVR in an open space and see if it shuts down.

Last year I faced the same shutting down problem and it was due to a faulty channel and power rectifier IC. Got them replaced from the service center, but had to pay around 3.5K as the avr was out of warranty. I suggest you to take the avr to the service center asap before warranty expires.

Yes as baijuxavior said, better to check with the service center within warranty period. I suspect it might be a hardware fault, not the heat. Because Denon never heats up too much, even I'm using it in a closed cabinet with back open. So much heat can not be generated by AVR generate after half n hour, so I suspect its a hardware problem.

But, first tell me which speakers are you using?

Its polk audio tsi series am using...is it not due to insufficient power supply..

You can do one thing > try to reset the microprocessor.

1 - Turn off the power using ON/STANDBY.
2 - Press ON/STANDBY while simultaneously pressing the "Source Select <" and "Source Select >" (leftmost buttons just under the front panel display)
3 - Once the display starts flashing at intervals of about 1 second, release the two buttons (hold for at least 4-5 seconds).

** If in step 3 the display does not flash at intervals of about 1 second, start over from step 1.

If the avr shuts down due to low voltage then the led will light red continously. There is no flashing. Read the Troubleshooting section of the manual to know various errors and the possible reasons.

It was actually due to power constrain , what i have done just added a stabilizer to full fill the requirement and as off now its working for me..

I'm using Pioneer VSX-522K, which used to switch off itself after every 3 or 4 hours continuous running. Then, we need to press the power button to turn on again. Is this behavior common across all AVRs?

No it isnt

I was wrong problem is still there as its work fine for half n hour than restart again n again and after two three times red led start flashing regularly... What should i do now?

Set all your speakers at small.
Set LFE, not LFE+Main, at 80 Hz.
Set Crossover at 80 Hz.

The AVR has sufficient power to drive your speakers in a residential scenario. At what Volume setting are you driving the speakers?
Suggest the following
1) How hot does the AVR feel when you touch it? (Should be lukewarm). Since It has ventilation from top it is essential to have a clearance at the top. Try out the AVR after removing from the rack. I know its a lot of work but you need to eliminate this possibility
2) Vacuum clean the AVR - you need not open it up but just try to clean through the vents. This will hopefully dislodge any loose debris causing a short inside
3) The speaker wire ends might be OK but also check along the entire length of the wire for frayed wire. ( Happened to me when I was dragging the stand)

I suggest you to contact the service center immediately. I am speaking from my own experience. Better get it serviced within the warranty period. Power supply problem seems to be common in Denon AVRs. The shutting down may be due to an overheated regulator IC.

The problem could also be due to loose cable connection inside the avr. My avr showed this problem after I received it back from the service center. I opened the enclosure, removed the cables that connect to the hdmi board and reinserted after a few minutes and this solved the issue.

If you don't have a stabilizer with the HT you possess, add it now and see whether it solves the issue or not. As such, you must have a stabilizer so it won't be a bad investment. A 2 KVA one is sufficient.

Definitely you would need a visit to the service guys if the stabilizer does not sort out the current problem! Myriad here has suggested some pointers, carry it out too, just to be sure. Here, you would be feeding the LF below 80 Hz to the powered sub, which would relieve the AVR of the high load.
