AVR+speaker combo nice deal going soon..plz reply quickly

Hi all,

For my home theatre I was looking at a combo available on amazon UK (a cousin is coming back from there so he can bring it along)..Link.

Wharfs + Onkyo 507 for arnd Rs 64,000/-

What do u think abt the deal ?..plz reply quickly if possible as deal is abt to end. (will be used mainly for movies)

Also I've heard that custom duty is exempt upto Rs 40.000/- , so will I have to pay duty also for this? How much do u have any idea?

What abt electricals? Will it work here in India or will I need some converter due to different electrical standards? (sorry, im a complete newbie!)

Hi,

You will be liable to pay tax and the tax exempt applies only if your cousin brings them along and that is limited to 25K.

Also, you will need a stepdown transformer for your AVR. As far as speakers go, you should not have any problem.

It's from Amazon UK - So no requirements for Step-down Transformer.

Please do check the price of this combination in India - If the price difference is more than 25% it'snt worth the risk IMHO

If bringing from UK you dont need a stepdown transformer, the mains voltage there is same as India. You will have to pay customs though.

So, what do u think? (i have no idea of the duty i will have to pay)

Which Wharf package are you getting? I feel you should rather buy it from here. Not worth the hassle bringing the speakers IMHO.

Why im keen on this is that my budget is arnd 60k. For that price i will get Jamo A102HCS 5.1 speakers only.

No comparison between the two!

As far as risk - Minor chance of avoiding the Customs for such a big item, Also another big worry is warranty. This is AVR & Speakers and have little chance of going kaput - But if you're unlucky. I don't think Onkyo or Wharf offer International warranty as well.

If you are looking for deals the best to be had is in Dubai. The Onkyo 607 with Wharfedale 5.1 (9 series) is available for roughly 4000AED (50K INR). I think they charge an additional 500AED for the 10 series.

Hi bee,

The customs duty is levied by Indian customs.From whichever country your friend brings the items the limit 25k. Beyond that you have to pay duty.

denon 1610 - 26
wharfdale 10.5 - 35 (The only tower at 30-40k which has a true mid range of 600hz-3000khz and not 200hz-2000khz. It's even better than the 10.6 because 10.6 has only high and mid bass x 2 while 10.5 has high, true mid and low)
Interconnects - 3k

I'd pick that over the onk+wharf which is just high and midbass and low, just gives surround, but two good fronts is anyday more important than surround to me.

Customs rules are the same for all countries excepting Nepal and Sri Lanka. Ask your friend to visit a few Malls. Unfortunately, it is part of Dubai Shopping Festival and one has to browse the malls to see what is available.

Hi all,

Thanks so much! Its almost been like a live brainstorming interesting boardroom discussion! (only it hasnt sucked corporate-dilbert-style !)

So it comes down to :
1) Get it from UK & pay approx 85k (with duty. My naughty brain is thinking of slicing up the shipment into 3 parts each costing less than 25k!)
2) Get it from Dubai & pay approx 67k (2 slices ? !!! lol)
3) Maybe i can get Denon 1610 + Mission MV-DS 5.1 (AV-Max mag best of 2009 winner) at 60k
4) Decide that maybe i should channelize my energy into earning more, rat-race more etc etc.

Thanks corElement for that info (appeals to the geek in me) but i will have to be better at financials too not just geekiness to make that possible!
