Boston Acoustics with Norge 2060

Hi Rohit,

I auditioned Dali Zensor 1S again this week at DNI Bellandur, Bangalore. Was not happy with the sound again.

So finally closed the deal with Bluewave Bangalore on Boston Acoustics A26, since I liked the sound of them the most.

They should be getting delivered anytime soon.

In the meantime, can you or anyone else on the forum guide me to somebody who makes custom made bookshelves stands ? My budget is around 5k so cannot really go for Tanos (hope I spell the name correctly) which are 8.5 k.

I read on the previous posts that Mr. Murthy make some good stands. So I've been trying to get hold of him without any luck ? My vendor offered me something for 5.4 k without arranging for a "dekho" so I rejected him outright.

Any one else except Mr Murthy in Bangalore who make custom speakers ?

Many Thanks,
Syed

Congrats on your purchase.
No idea of stands though.
Get some with good spikes to act like good isolators. The more sturdy the better. You could even fill it with sand if it supports to do that (having hollow pipe) design.

Thanks Rohit.

I took GM spikes which seem to be performing pretty good. Many Thanks for all the help.

Vardesh - I just called up Mr. Pradeep from tanotis mart. He said that the stand height is just 2 feets (24 inches) and unadjustable ? Would that be sufficient ?

@syed_rizvi :

Speaker should be same level as your ears when you are sitting on a listening sofa .This is approx 2.5ft to 3 ft .Tono stand max height is also 25inch.Check your listening preference.Get review of the product because no experience dealing with the seller.
Did you check Mr Murthy stands in your city.

Hi Vardesh,

Mr Murthy is hard to get by. I've been calling him since yesterday but he is still unreachable. Some Mr. Madhavan who picked up the call said he is out of station, without mobile. Will keep trying..

Thanks Rohit.

I took GM spikes which seem to be performing pretty good. Many Thanks for all the help.

Good to know!
My pleasure :) We all are here to learn from each other including me. We are just students of music so feel free to keep interaction!

BTW, yes the stands should be such that the tweeter is at ear level. This will affect height of the "sound-stage". Also a sturdy stand can make a lot of difference.

Do check if someone is selling their speaker stands in bangalore. Just start a thread in wanted section. With the money you save - invest in some good cables (recommended earlier) or buy music of your liking :) Let's not forget it is just a metal stand and can last more than us probably so can get used as well. no probs.

Cheers!

Sorry if I missed but it is not very clear what source you are going to use?

I did see a mention of you using your mobile phone for that for playing mp3.

If indeed it is yet to be finalized the following are options:
1. CD player
2. DAC
3. Turntable! (A whole different game, maybe for later in your journey and subject to your playing style :) )

For a good CD player you will have to shell out quite some money. A used one should be got for around 8-9K I guess. Do so reading on "Marantz" or "Cambridge Audio" CD players and even "NAD".

Better still you can consider a DAC (it will be a component that simply does the digital to analog conversion). You can feed the output of any decent DVD player to the DAC or if the DAC supports USB then it can be driven using a laptop/PC USB output. Do read up on players like "foobar"/"Mediamonkey" and "J River" if you intend to go the DAC route.

My recommendation would be go with a DAC, that way you get flexibility.

Do some reading on ODAC or some similar DACs.

These are just pointers and you will need to do some reading to make sense of it :) But that is the fun part.

cheers!
enjoy your music.

Sure Rohit,

I'll all your advise and go ahead and put the add in the "wanted section".

Also, the idea that you gave to me about DAC is indeed very good. I was mostly planing to use MP3 from mobile or otherwise a PC (I have a Mac Book Pro which is a monster machine :-)).

I also have a cheap LG DVD player which my brother gifted to sister in law couple of years back. Since no one was using it now, I just picked it up thinking that it might be of use.

Thanks again for all the help.

You need to be very careful about a good source. Once you setup settles down it is going to be all about the source.

It is "garbage in garbage out".

At the minimum you would require a decent CD player, a DAC would be better of course both for flexibility and value for money.

Playing mp3 would be rather injustice (atleast 320 kbps recommended). If you need to go digital then prefer using FLAC which is a lossless format. Since you are shelling out some serious money I would really refrain from recommending mp3's. OK to start with but to truely enjoy Hi fidelity music it is recommended to go lossless. No that mp3 sound bad but good quality recordings and format make all the difference.

Its the cheapest way to upgrade your system! Just use good quality music.

cheers!

Sure Rohit,

I have a couple of CDs with me which just use to sound awesome on my brothers set up (Norge Concerto+ Wharfdale Diamond 9.2). Will keep you advise in mind and try and run stuff from the CD as much as I can.

Actually, I dont have any budget for the source at this time after shelling out around 30k for this basic set up. So for the time being, I intend to use the CD player of my Macbook pro and see how it fares.

I'm not sure how good would be the cheap DVD player along with this set so will try and avoid it for the time being
