Carrying AV revceiver from USA to India

On my recent visit to the U.S. I picked up a Pioneer VSX-1021K and transported it in my luggage without any problems. I used a regular soft 24" suitcase (the fabric kind with the sides stiffened by cardboard or plastic), padded the bottom with new socks that I was going to buy anyway and placed the receiver with it's thermocole end-pieces on them (I had to trim them a bit to make them fit width-wise). I then padded all sides with more socks/underwear. The reason I used hosiery is because they are nicely rolled up and taped when you buy them and you can just insert them where needed easily (especially to protect the connectors at the back). The top was padded with as many clothes as I could fit. The suitcase was opened by the TSA but thankfully the person put everything back as I had packed them.

So, as an added bonus, I have a two-year supply of hosiery along with my spanking new receiver :-).

U guys are just awesome!! Now i want to carry an avr denon 1912, bookshelves dali zensor 1s pair , a zensor vokal.. strategies please

A bit of planning is all that is needed. :)
( I had carried an Onkyo receiver ( 32 lbs ) and 4 Onkyo bookshelves from Japan once )

Things I did
1: Got 2 hard suit cases sufficient to put this into.
2: Got loads of bubble wraps.
3: The receiver had thermocol on the sides. So bubble-wrapped it with the thermocol and filled the space inbetween using styrofoam balls.
4: The speakers were wrapped only with bubble wrap.
5: I kept books close to the sides of the suitcase and filled the space between receiver and books with sponge which was available from the 100 yen shops there .. ( same for speakers too )
6: The total weight of the suit case didnt exceed 22 kg ( which was the norm i think )
7: Double checked both the suit case for package tightness.

Hope this helps.

anybody ever tried carrying speakers in a suitcase?

i have a friend bringing in sonus fabers from the usa in a couple of days. she wanted to put them in a suitcase, but i couldn't figure out how they could be protected within (i have some experience in packing - stereo equipment, musical instruments etc) - unless you can put the box containing the speakers itself in the suitcase. so i told her to bring it in the box it was shipped in.

Hi, I am new to hifivision.

I am too thinking to by an AV receiver from US and bring to India.
Has anyone done this recently?
What are custom rules in this matter?
& How custom people treat this? Do they let it pass thru or hold you off?

Thanks,
Akshat

Hi Akshat

topis has been discussed many times, please read the thread.
custom has defined rules available at website.
duty depends on the value and overall stuff you are bringing in.

if you are lucky they dont even bother sometime.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
