Its got a Shure M55E cartridge with a broken stylus!

Can the turntable gurus on this forum guide me with advice on replacement cartridges/stylus.

Thanks murali_n ! Could you suggest any tt specialist /tt repair outlets in mumbai who i could get in touch with as regards a replacement cartridge.

I'm looking for tt specialists in mumbai who would be able to procure the replacement cartridges. Any suggestions guys?

You can buy stylus from JICO Phonograph Stylus : N55E
I am using it since 2 years and its better than original.

Regards,
Sachin

Thanks for the advice but i am looking to get this done in mumbai itself. Hence i asked if anyone could recommend or suggest specialists in mumbai who would be able to resolve the issue! I'd appreciate suggestions.....

There are no TT specialists in Bombay to help you with your M55E stylus. You either buy one off the net, or keep on the lookout for a second hand item for sale on one of the local sites. There was a guy on Quikr (based in Borivali, I think) some time back who had a bunch of cartridges and styli, including the 55E for sale. You could try doing a search for 'Shure' or 'cartridges' on Quikr, and it just might be still available, with a bit of luck.

The M55 is only so-so. I bought one from the Borivali guy. I suggest upgrade to M97xE. Available new from Electronic Emporium, off Lamington Road. Contact Jerry +919820901941. Or you can buy much cheaper from online retailers (US).

Well i'm not looking at the M55E only , i'm open to other compatible options from audio technica / ortofon etc...

i'll try my luck on quikr...hope to zero in on a solution!

Thanks for the suggestion.:)

Thanks for this info! I'll contact them asap...:)

Just had a word with Jerry! The M97XE retails for approx INR 5500, the M44-7 comes for approx INR3900. i might just decide on the 44-7 which has some great reviews..... quite a performer for the price!

i've also been advised the ortofon OM-5E , another tremendous cartridge !..thats for around INR4500

I was also looking out for a new Cart recently...and our FM 'Sachu, Denom and Malvai' all experts guided me to this model Shure M97XE which they say is an Audiophile category cart where as M44-7 is more suitable for DJs. As per their advise I contacted the Mumbai dealer, which you mentioned, who quoted 5500/-.

Yeah! that seems to be the way to go ...the M97XE! :)

If you're looking at Ortofon I suggest the OM-10 rather than OM5E. OM5E comes standard with a lot of TTs these days, but most folks upgrade to 10 and the general consensus is much improved performance.

Not sure how much it sells for here in India but I got it from the US about a year back for roughly 4.5k

My I suggest a low priced Grado cartridge?

A Grado Black is lowest priced but pls extend your self up their model line as far as possible based on your budget.

Amazon.com USA carries these cartridges.

Also, remove the dust cover when you play records. The dust cover picks up airborne vibrations that will then be transmitted to the turntable. Don't put the cover down while playing records because then you have a resonance chamber. So best to remove it while playing records and replace it when the turn table is idle.
