Testing speaker drives (without the baffle) - is it a good way of testing a speaker wbefore buying? How do I choose a woofer and tweeter for a speaker project?

Y do u wanna test them in a open baffle configuration? Y not just put them in a box and listen?? and for the tweeters, boxes dont matter

Putting the speaker in a open baffle and testing it in a an-echoic environment or gated impulse response would give you the frequency response of the driver (on and off axis depending how you place the microphone). This would be useful in determining the crossover point considering the speaker position WRTO the listener (or in general).

Just my .02 cents.

Thanks for the replies; then , what sort of program material should I use to test the speaker drivers - music, radio, white noise, pink noise, sweeper test from an android application - what then?

A completely unknown woofer can be tested by looking at the voice coil size and tapping it gently near the dust cap while placing them close to your ears.

The suund of the tap will be approximately close to the woofers resonance. If the driver has more mid freq response by listening to the tap u can judge to great extent the quality of the driver.

I have in my experience selected /rejected drivers just because I liked or did not like the tap sound.

My 1 cent.
