Hi
i have a cambridge audio 640c cd player lying around. would like to play my music off a computer. i was wondering if it could be converted to use as a stand alone DAC

I doubt if it can be done, unless you are a super expert in electronics in which case this question would have not arised in first place!

From what I gather (although it might be just what "they" want me to believe!) the choice and implementation of the USB interface is as important as the that of the DAC chip itself. This is not something for a beginner.

Very decent DACs can be had for little money, and usable ones for much less. The Schitt people even do a low-budget DSD DAC now. My vote: don't mess around with the CD player: buy a DAC!

^^True. If we are going to DIY a DAC into the CDP, it is probably going to cost significantly that might put you into the region of some good entry level DAC which could sound better. I have the same CA 640C v2 and the Caiman DAC which I sold recently was way better than the CDP.

Thanks guys. I have the CDP lying around and the tray motor isn't working. I'm also not sure on my upgrade plans and wanted something intermediate in the meanwhile hence the thought
