Mobile phone manufacturer may not even spend 2% of cost on Dac.
Moreover in such a small size space allotted for DAC what to expect?
I connected my phone to atleast 3 amps, all I could hear is cheap sound.

Nobody has any faith in the built-in sound-card/DAC on a PC motherboard, and yet high quality sound is expected from a phone.

Well, I suppose I can answer my own question: most smart phones cost a lot more than most motherboards, and phones are quite often sold by highlighting the other stuff that they do, including camera, navigation, audio.

As with many things electronic/miniature, the quality of portable audio has increased to the point where even a cheap "MP3 player" gives quite decent results with a decent earphone plugged into it. If we are spending tens of thousands on a phone, we should certainly expect better than that, but, I am still left wondering... How much can we expect from this shirt-pocket-sized thing that does so much stuff as well as playing sound? How much should we expect?

So far I have never really used a phone for portable audio. When I travel I use my Cowon A2 --- which is brick compared to modern designs. One aspect, apart from sound quality, is that I can rely on it's battery getting me through the night on the train. Maybe it is something for me to rethink.

I don't know what DAC is there in my Nokia E6 but the sound through USB out fed into standalone DAC is better than that through headphone socket fed into amp directly. I had bought the phone after goign through GSM arena site which showed excellent results in test with a very flat frequency response curve.

GSMArena results are for active load. For passive load like headphones, numbers drop quite a bit. For newer phones they also include response and numbers after attaching the headphones. They are not that impressive after attaching the passive load.

This is the caveat in their tests as there would seldom be any active load if I am correct.
