HI EVERYBODY,

Not for Audiophiles! so gurus excuse me.:o this is for Music lovers those who are thinking to upgrade ur old DVD player. Wait!:p in Amazon/ebay online u get DAC (digital to analog convertor) for just 1000/- to 2000/- i bought one with a blue rigger toslink optical cable for 1250/-.(Linetek).:licklips: service is very good within a week u will get the product at ur home. Only you have to pay online & its hassle free. It comes with a 5volts adapter just plug in to mains, remove the DVD players optical socket cover at the rear, connect the toslink optical cable one end to DVD & other end to DAC & DAC output to ur Amplifier OR home theatre its done. u can hear the diference in output quality. Clearity & depth increase overall 30% as I felt.:yahoo: Hope its worth the try. (Make sure u won't fold or bend the optical cable hence it will break inside.its fine glass inside.)

It would be necessary to bend it a long way to break it --- but not very far to degrade the sound.

I used to use optical toslink quite a lot a year or ten ago. On one occasion I thought I'd broken one, but the box had got pushed back against the wall, crushing the cable against it. Putting things in their right place and removing the bend put the sound back to rights too.

As far as I know, standard toslink opticals are actually plastic, not glass. I think they are also quite a lot thicker than the sort of glass fibre optics that are used for high-speed data comms.

I have a Panasonic blu ray player connected to Denon 1713 AVR and then 5.1 Polk speakers. Do you think a DAC is needed for me?

The trouble with your recommendation? I love my music too much to do that.. [emoji4]

I didn't recommend anything --- except not to bend optical cable if a person does use it.

Once upon a time, I had a number of devices with with optical interfaces. Now I don't, or at least, nothing that I needed to use it for in a long time.

Actually, I don't have any current use for co-ax digital either: only USB and Firewire.

I also don't think the Denon 1713 has digital out - so you cannot attach a DAC to the output of your AVR.

Oops! That was a tongue-in-cheek reply to the OP's recommendation for a noname dac chip, not a response to your post... [emoji5]

I thought you had it in for optical toslink! :)

(well, you might have... lots of people do. Unfairly, I think, except of course for the limited sample rates.)

Actually the one time I tried a toslink optical it sounded harsh gritty and terrible. No doubt it was the jitters...

If someone is looking for a really cheap DAC (that audiophiles would find it hard to ridicule), they can look at Fiio D03K.

I bought one recently for use with my TV. For its price (2k), not bad at all. Better than the crappy DAC in the TV. And may be better than the one in many of the so called Soundbars. I think it is also available on ebay/ amazon/ shopclues etc from Pristine note.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
