Could anyone post impressions as to how the PCM1793 or TDA1543 compare with the Asus Xonar / Essence ???

I'd say go with the y1; its a very well documented project, can be built with various configs, great support from amb & its got some good reviews.

I've built a couple of y1 lites myself, currently taken them apart to upgrade one to y1 full & the other to y2.

The DAC chip itself has little to do with how good a DAC can sound. Its the associating circuitry that goes with it that makes the huge difference in sound quality.
