DIY USB to Coaxial/ SPDIF converter

Hi everyone, was planning to buy a USB to digital output convertor to play audio from my PC using old standalone DACs like the Wadia 12 without a USB input. Although they are rather inexpensive in the market, wondered if they can be made by myself using the standard chips (found PCM2704 from TI to be the commonly used one)? If someone has made one already, could you point me in the right direction?
