Hi,

post.jpg

(the speakers are toed in a little and they are approx 7' apart. To get the full view, i had to use a wide angle 18mm lens and hence it may look a little tilted/distorted)

This is an upgrade from my previous DIY Sewage pipe design for Fostex FE103E full range drivers. When i did my first project, i just wanted to put in the least efforts and also allow the drivers to "burn in" :) and to hear them for some time. It turn out good and then i thought of giving these little drivers their deserved proper enclosures.

I researched the web for some good proven designs for this little driver considering their short comings etc., like SOLO123, Fostex recommended 2 designs and 1 or 2 more. From the majority it looked Zigmahornett was a better suited design for these drivers and above all, i liked the skinny tall feel of this design which would compliment most of the decors. Then it is easy to make as well.

I did not want to get into the carpentry part of it and hired a local carpenter in Chennai who clearly understood the design and did it precisely in 5 hours flat. The design was borrowed from this link and made to the exact measurements.

Zigmahornet Speakers with Fostex FE103E

Materials used : 12 mm Marine Plywood 6x4 sheet - Rs. 1000
Baffle cutting and labour - Rs. 800

Used a 7" long Coir based foam for the dampening straight behind the driver. Two 12mm sheets were fused together to form the base, drilled holes and inserted 2" long nuts and bolts as spikes.

Then came really my part - painting. I thought of veneering this, but settled for painting it myself as i wanted to do something on my own for these speakers. Went and bought 250ml of Black ASPA (automotive) paint, turpentine oil, different grades of sand paper, wood putty.

Sanded the entire enclosure, filled up the dents, holes with putty, sanded again, applied primer, sanded again, applied first coat using a roller brush, sanded, second coat, sanded, third coat and done. I will do a polish may be in another week time to get it more glossy. Lessons learnt - I should have applied full putty for the enclosure and probably used a softer putty (white instead of grey) so that it could have been much much smoother. Anyway the work was satisfactory.

Connected the binding posts, mounted the drivers and finished.

Listening observations :
Much better than my sewage pipe in all fronts
Clear highs, little harsher mid-range and a descent low
Imaging was right on
Nice sound stage (tested with my only known track - Bricks in the wall)
Excellent room filling presense (14x12 room)
As a next step, added my Mordaunt short 309i sub woofer and it complimented it much better.

To bring down the harsher mids, i used a 2.49ohm 5W resistor in series on the +ve and it was fine. May be a proper BSC would do justice..later :)

I am not an expert in explaining the nuiances of music, but from whatever mixture i heard like Katie Melua (piece by piece), Mark Knopfler (Private Investigation), Wall, Audiophile voices, The Hunter by Jeniffer Warnes (somewhere somebody and way down way) and some carnatic instrumental, it produces overall good results and way better than my Mission M32i bookshelves. This is my opinion and considering the overall cost of making it - approx Rs. 10000 including Drivers, Enclosure, it is worth.

I think the Ziggies are excellent considering their limitations and they are excellent except may be hard rock and those type of generes.

I would like my forum freinds to have an audition whenever they find time and pass by Chromepet, Chennai.

Currently driving them using a NAD355BEE amp and may be a simple Tube amp would do more good to these beauties.

Excellent work....neatly done...I hope an extensive review of your skinnies by resident gurus is done...Venkatcr, Ram,Titus.. r u guys listening?

wow! they look amazing...lean mean machines...

are you using two strands of CAT5 like in your sewage pipes? Try with just one strand and see if that brings down the harshness of the mids...

These may sound better but I have to say, those sewage pipes did add a different character to your setup ;)

swami, Ah, your hunger hasnt died down! Kudos! I shall contact you next time I am in Chennai for an audition.
Is the bass better with these enclosure than you earlier pipe build?

Hi Swami69,

Lovely looking speakers. I'm sure they sound as great as well. Would like to audition them. Yes, you are right, they need a tube amp to sound their best but the musical choices would be rather limited I guess.

Thanks to all of you and i would be very happy if some of our experienced members can make it to my place sometime to have a listen and give their comments. That would be a great opportunity to learn and i promise, i will be a good host.:) Whenever the next Chennai HFV meet happens, i can lug it there as well. No issues.

@Captrajesh - you are welcome anytime, i live in Chromepet and give me call when it suits you.
@iaudio - You are welcome, drop in. Yes the bass is much better and tight and i think the proper measurements and the wooden cabinet makes the difference than the PVC sewage pipes.
@kittu, grubyhalo - thanks freinds

Thanks soulforged. I would admit the current speaker connections are not a well thought out process. I am using a CAT5 braided wire from the binding post to the driver terminal and using a proper Speaker cable from my amp to the binding post. If i understand you correctly, i need to remove this whole thing and replace a single strand all the way from the AMP terminals to the Driver teminals, i think that is the logic, correct.

If the above theory is correct, i will try it out as it is easy and let you know my findings.

YES, the sewage pipes were....wierd/unique, what to say, but were looking different.

Capt, i agree with you. A tube amp would definetely be much more musical for these drivers, but as you say it will limit the options of music. e.g. i have now connected my sub to my NAD and it takes care of the lower frequencies and so i can listen to mostly all types without much issues. But, a tube amp - only 2CH and no sub connections, right. That would limit. hmm.

May be after sometime, i will try a larger FR driver and a different cabinet which will handle most frequencies well. Addictive !

Gr8 idea:clapping:. Also, there would be a lot more to audition. Mark's Amp & speakers, Linumguru's Amp, Soundsgreat's speakers etc. Also there are goodies to be won.

The driver size is a tradeoff. If you use a bigger driver, it will be slower and there come the associated issues. I understand that Lowthers are fast. Yet to audition them.

Hi Capt, i thought i missed something and i referred to the Chennai HFV meet 3 thread and i found no activity there. Do you have any specific date as you are listing down the equips, goodies, looks like things are happening in the background. Sorry, if i have missed to follow any other thread where this is being discussed. Let me know. Thanks.

Swami, I was talking about the connection from the binding post to the speaker terminals...not sure about taking it all the way to the amp...if it is not risky in any way, maybe you could try it out...

Thanks Capt for clarifying and hope we have it soon. We had a wonderful meet last time and looking forward to seeing you all.

For those thinking [or fantasizing] of building this - this driver is supposed to be a lot better for the ZigmaHornets. For more information - google is your friend

Hi Keith_correa, yes, Merrill DCA4 drivers are said to be a good match for Zigmahorns as per a great review by 6 moons. I have not heard them, but should be good and probably better than the Fostex FE103E. DIY enthusiasts have now options on drivers to mount to these good looking easy to make zigma design :)

Contests Swami. Looks good. How is the bass. Did you need any subwoofer support?

Cheers.
Hi Anilva, the bass is pretty descent from these. But, still i have added a MS309i sub which adds a better dimension to those lows. I would say it sounds better with a sub.
