I was able to pick up a Dual 701 turntable on an as-is basis yesterday. The TT looked to be in good shape though it was covered with layers of dirt and debris. Brought it home and as expected, it didn't work.
I need some advice from others on whether it would be worth it to resurrect this TT. I have read lots of good things about it - at one time, it was apparently the world's quietest turntable. Any suggestions folks?

Dual 701 was the most sought after of the Dual turntables. It is an electronic turntable with hall effect device control of the speed and is also quite heavy. I have a sibling model of 701 called the 721.

Only reason why a 701 will not work would be due to a problem with it's electronics. It's motor (which is the platter itself) is unlikely to be damaged normally. For example, my 721 gave me problems and I had to replace the transformer. The service manual is available for the 701 on the net.

Hopefully you will be able to get it fixed.

Cheers.

Will post pics of the TT later today when I have some free time.
Spoke to Bill Neumann of the fixmydual website in US yesterday and he too spoke highly about the Dual 701. Am trying to decide whether it's worth sending it to Mr Neumann to fix as it will probably cost me upwards of $200.
@Anil, have already downloaded manual and service manual; I'm no expert at DIY but I think there are no major problems with the TT. The innards seem to be very clean.
Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers

The 701 is a legendary direct drive... if you tweak it and bring it up to spec, it will be quite a killer turntable.
In its stock form, however, it is very un-impressive. But give it a good wood base plinth, play around with the carts, rewire the tonearm to a better quality one, change the phono cable to a better one and hear the difference! You'll never want to part with it.

I just bought a restored 701 from Bill, and can tell you it is great! Bill does a wonderful job, and the 701 has replaced my Music Hall MMF5. It sounds better passed every track on my Shure Obstical Test Record at 1 gram, it is dead silent, and returns the arm at the end of a record. Send it to Bill, and get it working right.

Great pics, great Turntable can run for years hassle free

It really is a great table. More, and more I believe vintage is the only way to go for a good, solid, affordable turntable. The Music Hall MMF 5 I had just didn't stack up to this table in terms of sound or quality. Thought I was nuts to opt for the 36 year old table over the 3 year old one, but I'm so glag I did.

If it's not turning on at all, it's most likely due to an electrolytic capacitor located in the power supply. They had a tendency to fry. That gets replaced as part of Bills restoration.
