About 12 years ago I discovered this purely by chance when I was setting up a guys vinyl system and his wife came into the room to bring me coffee. I wrote to and had a letter printed in a UK hi fi magazine . The letter editor laughed at me. That same editor now recommends the idea regularly. Some British forum members thanked me saying it helped a lot....some said it sounded worse but most heard a definite difference.
It's so simple but in a lot of cases it improves , bass tightness , reduces standing bass waves so killing bass boom , increases detail, and opens up the soundstage width.
Varying effects in different rooms but most useful in square or rectangular rooms. Excuse me if you've heard it before but as far as I know It came from little old humble ME !
Without further addo.....
Sit and listen to a tune....get up...OPEN THE ROOM DOORS ...listen again. Some people find only opening one door by a few inches can even work.
Please let me know if you get any improvement eh ?
Or indeed any worse sound quality.
Or of course if you laugh...which I don't mind either lol.
Ivor.

Opening a door or a window is like creating an infinite absorber that will absorb all the frequencies equally and completely. I do it all the time and it controls the standing waves in my room.

Me too. I have a door down a corridor along length of the hall that is 28ft away from the opposite wall. I leave it open and the main door next to one speaker...

Then I lie down on the couch perpendicular to the standing waves, feet facing the speakers so they slice the oncoming waves. I make sure I don't clip my toe nails and I point my thumb toes horizontally. This is because a shock-wave of the bass notes in the shape of a cone is developed on the point where it hits my body. The long pointy toe nails allows the shock wave to be further ahead of my body so that it would not find interference from my body contours, thus allowing the bass notes to hit my ears at the same time as treble notes. This is also yet another way to deal with baffle step compensation if you don't want to tweak the speakers. Though I admit it is a bit novel :)

The same principle is applied to jet planes. You will recall seeing a pointy rod at the nose of an aircraft. :eek:hyeah:

Alternatively you can take Viagra and stand naked in the listening position. :eek:hyeah:

I agree that this works, and it works better for standing waves if the door/window is near a corner, as standing waves tend to accumulate at room corners.

Ivor,
If one is looking for 'fidelity' I doubt if sound quality would be worse with this particular tweak Infact one could say it will definately improve the sound quality in small room.

let me guess, either you listen to loud volumes or you have not so big listening room.

???

Biogas is good !! Just that one needs to figure a way to refill with it !

.... and Hydrogen Sulphide for 'that' telltale rotten egg smell and, that deliberate, yet giving-away look-away as if it was someone else ...... :p:D
