I am thinking of getting UPS from USA to pair with the following gear,

Panasonic plasma 55inch (55vt50)
Denon 3312 AVR
PS3/Wii/XBOX/STB

I haven't calculated the power requirements yet but my aim is graceful shutdown, nothing more, so may be a minute or two backup power is enough.

I was looking at this UPS Cyberpower 1500VA 900W Simulated Sine

or if pure Sine is neeeded this Cyberpower 1500VA Pure Sine

And please help me how to calculate my power requirements for the above gear.

Other than AVR, stuff in your list (TV + Consoles) should already work with 220V since these devices run on SMPS.

anyone know, if it is okay to buy UPS(110V) from USA to use with a step down transformer?

I am planning to buy step down transformers also from USA. any ideas?

Black Scorpio, it is better to do the step down after you stabilise the power supply. So a 220V UPS followed by a step down should be a better option.

Step down, theoretically is a very simple device. There is an input signal that is fed to a primary winding, and the resultant 110 volts is take from a secondary winding. It is a kind of passive device and cannot handle too much of voltage fluctuations. If you feed wrong voltage to the primary winding, there is no guarantee what you will get from the secondary winding. Though the windings can handle a little change in input voltage, the fluctuations in India are frustratingly variant.

Moreover, UPS/Stabilisers made in India understand the wild fluctuations that happen in this country. UPS made in the US will be working with smaller tolerances, and may not handle the extreme variations that occur here.

Step downs usually would have only one winding. With that, they can tolerate inputs of 180 - 260V and still provide 110V output.

Another vote for Buy In India.

I have never been to USA, but I would imagine that the power situation is closer to my UK than it is to India. That is that power cuts are occasional, not regular, so UPS are sold and bought as emergency devices, not as something that will be used, possibly even to its full battery capacity, almost daily.

It is quite likely that you will be making that warranty claim ... so buy local.

My dear friend, there are multiple type of transformers:

1. There is the simplest type with a fixed input and output points that I explained.
2. There is another kind where you can tap from multiple points in the secondary winding. Your so called electronic voltage stabilisers use this method. This is a very unreliable method.
3. There is the third kind that uses a motor to tap the output point. A sensor senses the input voltage and drives a motor to moves the output point. This is called a servo system, and is the most reliable, though that is a time delay.

Cheers
